Born on the Fourth of July comes to 4K in November

The 1989 film “Born on the Fourth of July” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 12th via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). The film, directed and co-written by Oliver Stone, starred Tom Cruise, Kyra Sedgwick, Frank Whaley, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, and Stephen Baldwin.

This release features a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative, supervised and approved by director Oliver Stone. The tech specs for the 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 Stereo lossless sound mixes. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder at Amazon, online retailer GRUV, and directly via Shout! Factory’s website. Ordering directly will get you a bonus poster. The contents of the 4K and Blu-ray discs including bonus materials are listed below.

Kinds of Kindness arrives on Blu-ray in October

The 2024 film “Kinds of Kindness” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on October 8th via Searchlight Pictures (Disney). The film, directed and co-written by Yorgos Lanthimos, stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alywn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound, on a BD-50 disc. The Blu-ray release will include a digital copy. UPDATE: You can now find the Blu-ray available for preorder at Amazon and retailer Walmart. The bonus materials set to be included with the release are listed below.

1990 John Waters film Cry-Baby comes to 4K in April

The 1990 film “Cry-Baby” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Special Edition on April 30th via KL Studio Classics (Kino Lorber). The film, written and directed by John Waters, starred Johnny Depp, Amy Locane, Traci LordsIggy PopRicki LakeSusan TyrrellKim McGuireWillem Dafoe, and Patricia Hearst.

This has received a brand new master (of the Theatrical Cut), taken from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. Fret not, the Director’s Cut will be included in HD on the second disc and has been sourced from the same 4K scan and a 4K scan of the interpositive of the Director’s Cut (specifically). Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision or HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and lossless audio, on a BD-100 disc. And, tech specs for the Blu-ray (Special Edition) include a 1080p HD video presentation (from that same new master) in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with lossless audio, on a BD-50 disc. The 4K release will come as a “combo pack” with a Blu-ray Disc. The Blu-ray release will include both cuts of the film on one disc.

The 2023 film “Poor Things” is officially coming to Blu-ray on March 12th via Searchlight Pictures (Disney). The film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael. It’s certainly worth noting that this film has been deemed “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

The tech specs for the release include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound, on a BD-50 disc. Oliver Stone film Platoon arrives on 4K September

The 1986 Academy Award winner (for “Best Picture”) Platoon is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 13th via Shout Select (Shout! Factory).  The film, winner of four Academy Awards, was written & directed by Oliver Stone, and it starred Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Tony Todd, James Terry McIlvain, Keith David, Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, and Johnny Depp.

Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray have yet to be fully detailed but should include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio and presumably HDR10 (at least) in terms of high dynamic range as well as perhaps Dolby Atmos sound and/or the original DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless mix — as found on the original 2011 Blu-ray release.  The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include a new Blu-ray counterpart.

Spider-Man No Way Home comes to 4K and Blu-ray April

The 2021 Marvel Studios film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on April 12th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.  The film, directed by Jon Watts, stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, and Alfred Molina.  It should most certainly be noted, at the time of writing, this film is “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound.  Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in 2.39:1 aspect with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound.  Both releases will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the 4K UHD Blu-ray getting its Blu-ray counterpart, the Blu-ray getting the DVD counterpart, and each includes a digital code (copy) of the film.

The 2021 film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” appears to be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray next year via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, according to retailer listings. There’s no official release date at this point, but stay tuned for a later news story when it gets fully announced.
