1988 film The Great Outdoors comes to 4K in April

The 1988 film “The Great Outdoors” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 28th via KL Studio Classics [Kino Lorber].

Howard Deutch directed the movie, written by John Hughes. It starred Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. The supporting cast included Stephanie FaracyAnnette BeningChris YoungIan Michael GiattiHilary GordonRebecca GordonRobert Prosky, and Lucy Deakins.

The movie has received a new 4K scan from the original camera negative. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) form of high dynamic range, lossless audio, on a BD-100 disc. The release will come as a 2-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. That Blu-ray will also feature the new 4K scan.

The 1981 film Thief gets a Criterion 4K in March

The 1981 film Thief is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 11th via The Criterion Collection. This film was the directorial debut by Michael Mann and he also co-wrote the film. The film starred James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, Jim Belushi, Robert Prosky, Tom Signorelli, and Dennis Farina. It’s certainly worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” based on critic reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.

The film has received a new 4K digital restoration of the director’s cut, supervised and approved by director Michael Mann. The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (or HDR10) form of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0 lossless surround sound. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The 1992 film Far and Away is coming to 4K in December

The 1992 film “Far and Away” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on December 17th via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). The film, directed and co-written by Ron Howard, starred Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, and Colm Meaney.

The movie has received a “4K transfer of the 35mm interpositive approved by cinematographer Mikael Salomon.” The tech specs for the 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range with Dolby Atmos as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo lossless sound. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray counterpart included.

1993 film Last Action Hero is getting a standard 4K in June

The 1993 action film “Last Action Hero” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger will be getting a standard 4K UHD Blu-ray release on June 15th, via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, in addition to the 4K SteelBook — also being released a month earlier in May (as previously discussed HERE).

The film, directed by John McTiernan, co-starred Austin O’Brien, F. Murray AbrahamArt Carney, Charles Dance, Tom Noonan, Robert Prosky, Anthony Quinn, and Ian McKellen. 1984 film “The Natural” starring Robert Redford comes to 4K in June

The 1984 Barry Levinson directed film The Natural starring Robert Redford is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a 35th Anniversary release on June 4th, via Sony. The film, nominated for 4 Oscars, featured a supporting cast including Robert DuvallGlenn Close, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Robert Prosky, Richard FarnsworthJoe Don Baker, and Michael Madsen. This 35th Anniversary 4K release will include both the Theatrical (138 minutes) and Director’s Cut (144 minutes) of the film – both on the 4K disc.

Tech specs for the 4K release have not yet been fully detailed it will come with HDR (presumably in the HDR10 variety) and Dolby Atmos sound, as well as the original stereo and 5.1 tracks (for the theatrical cut). The release will come in form of a “combo pack” with a Blu-ray Disc and a digital copy of the film included.
