According to retailers, the 1986 film adaptation of “Howard the Duck” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on July 6th via Universal Studios Home Entertainment. It was based on a Marvel Comics character of the same name. The film was executive produced by George Lucas, directed by Willard Huyck, and it starred Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones, Paul Guilfoyle, as well as featured the voice talent of Chip Zien (as “Howard T. Duck”). The tech specs for the 4K release have not yet at all been detailed, but you should expect it to include at least HDR10 form of high dynamic range and 5.1 lossless surround sound. The release appears (based on the art, above) to be coming in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include the Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film. No word yet on what bonus materials will be featured with the release.
UPDATE #1: You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray listed for preorder over at Amazon as well as over retailer Target as well as at online retailer HD Movie Source. That’s where the release date, aside from some rumors online that now seem to be verified, comes from. Stay tuned for further updates and for when this title gets officially announced by the studio [Universal].
UPDATE #2: It now appears that there will be an exclusive4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook for the film available over at retailer Best Buy, where it now has a preorder listing and the artwork pictured below.
Two of these films, those from 1986, are celebrating their 35th anniversary with these releases. One of these films (Some Kind of Wonderful) has previously only been available on the Blu-ray Disc format via a “5-Movie Collection” — released earlier this year. Each film as a Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured above) is now available to preorder over at Amazon via the links in the titles above or below. The full tech specs are listed below according to each film.
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will be in 1080p HD presented in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound. “Pretty in Pink” will be from the new remastered 4K scan in 1080p HD presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. And, finally, “Some Kind of Wonderful” will be in 1080p HD presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound. Each film will come with a digital code (copy) of the film. There will be a “John Hughes 5-Movie Collection” officially coming to Blu-ray Disc, as a set, on February 23rd, 2021, via Paramount. The 5-movie collection will include two films that will be making their debuts on the Blu-ray Disc format, noted accordingly below (with an *). The films in the 5-movie collection include:
“Planes, Trains, And Automobiles” (1987)
“Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” (1986)
“She’s Having a Baby” (1988) *
“Pretty in Pink” (1986)
“Some Kind of Wonderful” (1987) *
Three of the five films here were written, produced, and directed by the late John Hughes, with the exceptions being the last two films listed (“Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful”) which were only written & produced by Hughes. Those two other films were both directed by Howard Deutch. As I had mentioned, two of the films listed will be making their exclusivedebuts on the Blu-ray format via this set. You can now find the 5-Movie Collection on Blu-ray available to preorder over at Amazon. The tech specs for the films new on this set have not yet been detailed but the others all will for sure include 1080p HD video in their OAR (original aspect ratio) with lossless 5.1 surround sound. Stay tuned for an update on if the other two films will also get 5.1 lossless surround mixes. It is known that this set will come with digital copies of each of the five films. The “Back to the Future Ultimate Trilogy“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 20th, via Universal. The box set includes the three films “Back to the Future” (1985), “Back to the Future Part II” (1989), and “Back to the Future Part III” (1990). The films, directed by Robert Zemeckis & produced by Steven Spielberg, starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, James Tolkan, Billy Zane, and Thomas F. Wilson. The tech specs for the films include 2160p 4K presentations in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ forms of High Dynamic Range along with Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterparts as well as digital code (copy) included for each film.
Now, this may be confusing consumers but there will be a total of three different releases of the trilogy on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format: a standard 4K UHD Blu-ray set, a gift set (exclusive to Amazon), and a SteelBook set (exclusive to Best Buy).

Another form will be the 35th Anniversary Limited Edition TrilogySteelBook exclusive set at retailer Best Buy, which is now available for preorder (pictured below).
