1988 film The Great Outdoors comes to 4K in April

The 1988 film “The Great Outdoors” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 28th via KL Studio Classics [Kino Lorber].

Howard Deutch directed the movie, written by John Hughes. It starred Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. The supporting cast included Stephanie FaracyAnnette BeningChris YoungIan Michael GiattiHilary GordonRebecca GordonRobert Prosky, and Lucy Deakins.

The movie has received a new 4K scan from the original camera negative. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) form of high dynamic range, lossless audio, on a BD-100 disc. The release will come as a 2-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. That Blu-ray will also feature the new 4K scan.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray is not yet available for preorder at Amazon or any other retailers, but stay tuned. In the meantime, you can preorder the 4K UHD Blu-ray directly via Kino Lorber’s website. The bonus materials included on the release are listed below.

The Breakfast Club on Criterion 4K in November

The 1985 film The Breakfast Club is getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection on November 4th. John Hughes wrote, directed, and produced the movie. It starred Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, and Ally Sheedy.

The movie has received a new 4K digital restoration. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 form of high dynamic range. It will also feature uncompressed LPCM Mono and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The 2-disc set will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder at Amazon and directly from Criterion. The bonus materials set to be included with the release are listed below.

The 1991 film “Career Opportunities” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on April 22nd via KL Studio Classics. The movie was directed by Bryan Gordon and written & produced by John Hughes. The motion picture has received a new master from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The tech specs for the 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (or HDR10) and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo lossless sound, on a BD-100 disc. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The 1986 film “Pretty in Pink” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 11th via Paramount Home Media Distribution. The film was directed by Howard Deutch. It was written by John Hughes. The cast included Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer, Annie Potts, James Spader, and Harry Dean Stanton.

The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 with Dolby Vision and HDR10 and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. Planes, Trains & Automobiles getting 4K SteelBook

The 1987 film “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” will get an Amazon-exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on November 12th via Paramount Home Media Distribution. The film, written & directed by John Hughes, starred Steve Martin, John Candy, Edie McClurg, Michael McKean, Dylan Baker, and Laila Robins.

The movie back in 2022 received a 4K restoration and standard 4K UHD Blu-ray release. As previously mentioned, this 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook will be exclusive to retailer Amazon where you can find it now available for preorder. The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound, on a BD-66 disc. This 4K SteelBook release also includes a bonus Blu-ray Disc dubbed the bonus “lost luggage” Blu-ray and a digital copy. That bonus disc features the following extras.

3 John Hughes films are getting Blu-ray SteelBooks in June

Three films that were written by John Hughes will be getting limited edition Blu-ray Disc SteelBook releases on June 8th via Paramount Home Entertainment. These films include:

Two of these films, those from 1986, are celebrating their 35th anniversary with these releases. One of these films (Some Kind of Wonderful) has previously only been available on the Blu-ray Disc format via a “5-Movie Collection” — released earlier this year. Each film as a Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured above) is now available to preorder over at Amazon via the links in the titles above or below. The full tech specs are listed below according to each film.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will be in 1080p HD presented in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound. “Pretty in Pink” will be from the new remastered 4K scan in 1080p HD presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. And, finally, “Some Kind of Wonderful” will be in 1080p HD presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound. Each film will come with a digital code (copy) of the film. John Hughes 5-Movie Collection on Blu-ray in February

There will be a “John Hughes 5-Movie Collection” officially coming to Blu-ray Disc, as a set, on February 23rd, 2021, via Paramount. The 5-movie collection will include two films that will be making their debuts on the Blu-ray Disc format, noted accordingly below (with an *). The films in the 5-movie collection include:

  • “Planes, Trains, And Automobiles” (1987)
  • “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” (1986)
  • “She’s Having a Baby” (1988) *
  • “Pretty in Pink” (1986)
  • “Some Kind of Wonderful” (1987) *

Three of the five films here were written, produced, and directed by the late John Hughes, with the exceptions being the last two films listed (“Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful”) which were only written & produced by Hughes. Those two other films were both directed by Howard Deutch. As I had mentioned, two of the films listed will be making their exclusive debuts on the Blu-ray format via this set. You can now find the 5-Movie Collection on Blu-ray available to preorder over at Amazon. The tech specs for the films new on this set have not yet been detailed but the others all will for sure include 1080p HD video in their OAR (original aspect ratio) with lossless 5.1 surround sound. Stay tuned for an update on if the other two films will also get 5.1 lossless surround mixes. It is known that this set will come with digital copies of each of the five films.
