Final Fantasy The Spirits Within on 4K in November

The 2001 CG animated film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 16th, via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, celebrating its 20th anniversary, co-directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi and Motonori Sakakibara, featured the English voice talents of Ming-Na Wen, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Keith David, James Woods, and Donald Sutherland.

The film has been newly remastered. The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound, as well as the original theatrical mix in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. Bonus materials set to be included with the release are listed below.

Batman Year One commemorative 4K in November

The 2011 animated DC Universe Movie “Batman: Year One” will be getting a “Commemorative Edition” released to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format on November 9th via Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The film, co-directed by Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery, featured the voice talents of Ben McKenzie, Bryan Cranston, Eliza Dushku, Jeff Bennett, Jon Polito, Alex Rocco, Katee Sackhoff, Grey Griffin, Robin Atkin Downes, and Stephen Root.

The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and (presumably) the same lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound mix that was found on the previously released [2011] Blu-ray. This set will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film — compatible with Movies Anywhere. You cannot yet find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon or any other retailers, but stay tuned for an update on that. The bonus materials set to be included with this release are listed below.

The Wolf of Wall Street coming to 4K in December

The 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on December 14th via Paramount Home Entertainment. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese and based on a true story, starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, and Jon Favreau.

The movie has received a new transfer that was supervised by the director, Martin Scorsese. The tech specs for the release have not yet all been detailed but stay tuned for an update. The 2160p video presentation should at least include HDR10 form of high dynamic range. The release will come with a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the standard 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. It’s also worth noting that a limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured below) will be available on the same date. No sign if that will be a retailer exclusive or not, and there’s no preorder for it yet, but stay tuned for an update.

1978 film I Spit on Your Grave gets a 4K in October

The 1978 cult-classic horror film I Spit on Your Grave is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a limited edition release on October 26th via Ronin Flix. The film, written and directed by Meir Zarchi, starred Camille Keaton, Eron Tabor, Richard Pace, Anthony Nichols, and Gunter Kleemann. The movie has a new 2020 4K scan and restoration, from the original camera negative, and the Mono audio sound mix has also been restored from the uncut version — as detailed below.

“Featuring a brand new 2021 4K HDR Remaster done by Ronin Flix  on 4K Ultra HD, the 2020 4K scan and restoration of director Meir Zarchi’s uncut 35mm original camera negative and the restored original mono soundtrack …”

This limited edition “combo pack” release will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart (as pictured below) as well as a Blu-ray bonus disc with a feature-length documentary and limited edition slipcover.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range as well as DTS-HD Master Audio Mono, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround, and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo sound options. The tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with the same DTS-HD MA lossless sound mixes. You’ll have to order this title (it seems) directly via RoninFlix.com, where it is now available for preorder. There’s no sign of this release being available at any other retailers, but stay tuned for an update on that if it changes. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Viola Davis, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, Jai Courtney, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, and features the voice of Sylvester Stallone.

UPDATED: The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.90:1 aspect ratio with HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. The tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the same 1.90:1 aspect ratio and with the same Dolby Atmos sound. DC animated movie Injustice on 4K and Blu-ray October

The 2021 DC animated movie “Injustice” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on October 19th via Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The movie is an adaptation of the video game (“Injustice: Gods Among Us”) created by NeatherRealm Studios as well as the graphic novel. The film, directed by Matt Peters, features a voice cast of Justin Hartley, Anson Mount, Janet Varney, Brandon Micheal Hall, Kevin Pollak, Anika Noni Rose, Reid Scott, Edwin Hodge, and Gillian Jacobs.

The tech specs for the 4K and Blu-ray have yet to be fully detailed but stay tuned for an update. You should definitely expect the 4K UHD Blu-ray release to at least include the HDR10 form of high dynamic range. In terms of sound, it is likely this will include DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround on both releases. The 4K release will come in the form of the “combo pack” meaning it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart, with both releases also coming with a digital code (copy) of the film. Krampus The Naughty Cut on 4K in December

The 2015 film Krampus will be getting a “Collector’s Edition” 4K UHD Blu-ray release featuring The Naughty Cut on December 7th, via Scream Factory (Shout! Factory). The film, directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty, starred Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, Stefania LaVie Owen, Emjay Anthony, and David Koechner. Info regarding “The Naughty Cut” and how it differs from the theatrical cut of the film can be found in detail below.

“For the first time ever Michael’s Dougherty’s previously unseen “Naughty Cut” of the film will be seeing the light of day! This alternate version restores key dialogue and scenes that had to be trimmed from the original theatrical release to appease the MPAA. Supervised by filmmaker Michael Dougherty, this is the definitive version of the holiday cult classic!”

The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio, presumably with HDR10 form of high dynamic range (although yet confirmed) with the audio configuration and format not detailed yet either as well. This has received a new 4K scan [transfer] that was approved by the filmmakers (Josh and Benny Safdie). The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. The 4K UHD Blu-ray set will come as a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart. Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition 4K October

As promised, a Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition box set is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 26th via Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The 31-disc box set includes all six of the Peter Jackson-directed film adaptations of the J.R.R. Tolkein stories “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” via trilogies for each. The theatrical and extended versions of each of the six films will be included in this box set, and those films consist (chronologically) of the following:

  • “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001)
  • “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002)
  • “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003)
  • “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (2012)
  • “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” (2013)
  • “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” (2014)

The tech specs for the releases include 2160p video presentations for each film in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. The theatrical versions of the film are on one BD-100 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc, while the Extended Cuts are presented on two BD-100 4K discs (as part 1 and part 2). This set will also come in the form of a “combo pack,” meaning that it will include the Blu-ray Disc counterparts (remastered in 1080p HD) for both trilogies and for both theatrical and extended cut for each. Then, there’s a bonus disc that I’ll discuss a bit further below, which makes this a 31-disc set. Also, you’ll get a digital code (copy) of each of the six films and of each version — compatible with Movies Anywhere.

You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray of the Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector’s Edition available for preorder over at Amazon. The bonus materials set to be included with the release will feature all of the extras found on the previous Blu-ray (and DVD) releases as well as include an exclusive Bonus Disc.
