V for Vendetta officially on 4K UHD Blu-ray in November

The 2005 film adaptation of “V for Vendetta” starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 3rd, via Warner. Some of you may remember me reporting this last month, and as of today, it has been confirmed via a press release from the studio. The film, directed by James McTeigue & based on the graphic novel (of the same title), had a screenplay adapted by The Wachowskis — Lana Wachowski & Lilly Wachowski — best known for both writing & directing “The Matrix” (1999). The film co-starred Stephen ReaStephen FryRupert GravesTim Pigott-Smith, and John Hurt.

Tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will receive its Blu-ray Disc counterpart and come with a digital code (copy) of the film. You cannot yet find the standard 4K UHD Blu-ray listed over at Amazon yet, but stay tuned for an update on that. You can, however, find the standard 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at retailer Best Buy. Amazon will be getting an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray Giftset (as pictured below) which is now available for preorder, oddly enough.

Retailer Best Buy will also be getting an exclusive release of the film in the form of a 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured below), which is now available for preorder.

Now, the reason that I kept calling that version the standard 4K is because there will also be an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray Giftset available over at Amazon which is already up and available for preorder (pictured below). This exclusive gift set seems to include not only cool packaging but also a collectible booklet about the film itself.

1987 film Full Metal Jacket on 4K in September

The 1987 film Full Metal Jacket directed by Stanley Kubrick is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 22nd, via Warner. The film starred Matthew ModineVincent D’Onofrio, Adam Baldwin, Dorian Harewood, Kevyn Major Howard, Arliss Howard, Ed O’Ross, John Terry, Kieron Jecchinis, and the late R. Lee Ermey. Tech specs for the release (according to the back art) include a 2160p presentation in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio (presumably) with HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. It will be a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film. You can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of the film listed as available for preorder over at Amazon. It’s totally worth mentioning that there will be an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook available for the film over at retailer Best Buy (pictured below) which is now listed and should be a functional preorder listing soon.

Animated Ghost in the Shell on 4K in September

The original Japanese animated film “Ghost in the Shell in anime form from 1995 is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 8th, via Lionsgate – in celebration of its 25th anniversary. This news comes just as I had previously reported still it as a rumor earlier this month. The tech specs for the release include a 2160p 4K presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of High Dynamic Range as well as with Japanese & English language Dolby Atmos mixes and original Japanese 2.0 Stereo PCM sound mix. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that you’ll get the Blu-ray counterpart as well as a digital copy of the film. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon, as well as at retailers Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. It’s certainly worth noting that this release will also come in the form of an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook which is now available for preorder over at Best Buy (pictured below).

Back to the Future Ultimate Trilogy on 4K October

The Back to the Future Ultimate Trilogy is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 20th, via Universal. The box set includes the three films “Back to the Future” (1985), “Back to the Future Part II” (1989), and “Back to the Future Part III” (1990). The films, directed by Robert Zemeckis & produced by Steven Spielberg, starred Michael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea Thompson, James Tolkan, Billy Zane, and Thomas F. Wilson. The tech specs for the films include 2160p 4K presentations in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ forms of High Dynamic Range along with Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterparts as well as digital code (copy) included for each film.

Now, this may be confusing consumers but there will be a total of three different releases of the trilogy on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format: a standard 4K UHD Blu-ray set, a gift set (exclusive to Amazon), and a SteelBook set (exclusive to Best Buy).

So far, there’s The 4K UHD Blu-ray set now available for preorder over at Amazon, which includes a collectible levitating hoverboard (as pictured below).

“Goodfellas” getting 4K SteelBook in September

The tech specs will remain identical to the original 4K release, with the video in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio presented in the HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. The release will come as a “combo pack” meaning that it will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart, a second Blu-ray (for special features), and a digital code (copy) of the film. The bonus materials will be, again identical to those found on the previous (original) 4K release. You can now find this 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook listed for preorder over at Best Buy.

RUMOR: 1960 film “Spartacus” on 4K in July

Rumor time and it’s for a legendary film too. It seems the 1960 Stanley Kubrick directed film Spartacus starring Kirk Douglas is finally coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on July 21st, via Universal, according to now multiple retailer sources. *UPDATED* The film, celebrating its 60th anniversary, co-starred Laurence OlivierJean Simmons, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, John Gavin, and Tony Curtis. The tech specs and bonus materials for the release have not yet been detailed, but stay tuned for further details once this title gets officially announced by the studio.

As of today, you can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at retailer Target. I’ll be adding links to the preorder via other retailers as they are listed.

MAJOR UPDATED #2: You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook which will be exclusive to retailer Best Buy now available for preorder with the same 7/21 release date listed (pictured below).

MAJOR UPDATE #1: You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at online retailer Amazon. From the back of the package art (over there) we’ve learned that the tech specs for the release include 4K video in the 2.20:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and DTS:X sound. This is the “Extended” / “Restored Version” with 12 additional minutes and a 197-minute runtime. The release will come to 4K on a BD-66 disc. This will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film included. The bonus materials set to be included on the release (according to the back package art) are listed below.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that a Swedish 4K UHD Blu-ray of this film has already been announced, which ironically is listed to be coming out just a day before it does here in the United States. That would mean this release date, 7/21, which does indeed fall on a traditional Tuesday, stateside should be correct.

RUMOR: “The Goonies” comes to 4K in September

It seems we might be getting an idea of when to expect the rumored release of the 1985 Richard Donner film “The Goonies” on 4K UHD Blu-ray, via Warner. The release date previously said/reported to be coming in June, is now showing as September 1st over at retailer Best Buy for their Exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook release (pictured below). Meanwhile, the preorder listings are up for the standard 4K UHD Blu-ray (featuring the artwork above) over at retailers Target and Walmart. Stay tuned for further updates regarding this release as things become a bit more detailed and official.
