Star Trek Original 4-Movie Collection on 4K September

Amazon Commissions Earned

A Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 7th via Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment. The 4K set will include the first four films in the original “Star Trek” film franchise remastered in 4K. Those of course are “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (1982), “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (1984), and “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (1986). It should certainly be noted that the second film (“The Wrath of Khan”) will come with both the theatrical cut and the director’s cut.

Tech specs for each film on 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range. It is known that this set will be spanning across an 8-disc set and that it will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will come with each film’s Blu-ray Disc counterpart (pictured below) as well as a digital copy of each. UPDATE #1: Audio will be presented in Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless surround sound for each film, and the first film will get a Dolby 2.0 isolated score sound mix.

These four films all starred a primary cast (crew) of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and Nichelle Nichols. The films were directed by Robert Wise, Nicholas Meyer, and Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy actually directed the last two.

You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray set available for preorder over at Amazon. UPDATE #2: Also, individually released remastered versions of each of the four films on Blu-ray Disc will be released on the same date, September 21st. I’ve included each of the four of those below, before the official announcement, after the break. You can now find “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” remastered, “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” (Director’s Cut) remastered, “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” remastered, and “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” remastered on Blu-ray Disc individually available for preorder over at Amazon. [NOTE: Amazon Commissions Earned]. Each release will include bonus materials and a digital copy of the film.

And, again, because this set is covering four films the bonus materials run rather lengthy and include lots of previously released extras. So, you can find all that listed below in the official announcement from StarTrek’s website as well as directly via Paramount.

Amazon Commissions Earned

The cult-classic 1982 film The Beastmaster will be getting a standard 4K UHD Blu-ray release on July 27th via Vinegar Syndrome. The film has previously been released by Vinegar Syndrome as an exclusive on the 4K format directly on their website, but now will be available via other retailers in a standard form of packaging. The film, directed and co-written by Don Coscarelli and based on the novel of the same title, starred Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, Rip Torn, John Amos, Rod Loomis, Ben Hammer, and Billy Jayne.

The film has received a new 4K scan and restoration from the original 35mm interpositive negative. Tech specs for the 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and both the original Stereo 2.0 and 5.1 surround lossless sound mixes. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart in 1080p HD with the same audio mixes. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray / Blu-ray combo pack standard release available for preorder over at Amazon.

This version is not to be confused with Vinegar Syndrome’s previous exclusive 4K releases of the film and does not any of the physical extras that those did. I want to state that upfront. However, it will contain the following extras.

  •  Brand new commentary track with writer/director Don Coscarelli & writer/producer Paul Pepperman, moderated by filmmaker Joe Lynch
  • Archival commentary track with Don Coscarelli & Paul Pepperman

Demons I & II limited edition on 4K and Blu-ray October

Amazon Commissions Earned

The films “Demons” (1985) and “Demons 2” (1986) have both received new 4K restorations and are coming to both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc via “Special Limited Edition” set on October 19th via Synapse Films. The films, both directed by Lamberto Bava and co-written & produced by Dario Argento, are cult classics and have previously been released on Blu-ray back in 2014 by Synapse Films.

The tech specs for the films on 4K include 2160p video presentation, from a new 4K restoration of the original camera 35mm negatives, with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 Mono lossless mixes for both the original cut and U.S. theatrical cut. The 2.0 Mono lossless for the U.S. theatrical cut has been newly remastered by Synapse. The tech specs for the Blu-ray version of the set include a 1080p HD video presentation with the very same audio options. Neither of these releases will come as a “combo pack” so don’t expect the 4K to have its Blu-ray counterpart, or the Blu-ray to come with some DVDs. That’s not happening with this release. And, I for one respect that choice.

You can now find both the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc versions of the Special Limited Edition set available for preorder over at Amazon. NOTE: The 4K release will be region-free but the Blu-ray release will be Region A locked. Bonus materials set to be included with the set include some physical extras like a slipcover (o-card), a reproduction of the original movie ticket (for the first film), a birthday invitation for the sequel, a fold-out poster (for the first film), and reversible cover artwork. And, some new digital extras not featured on the 2014 Blu-ray releases will be included that are fully detailed below, after the break, for each version.
