2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on 4K in February

The 2011 film adaptation of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” starring Gary Oldman is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 22nd, 2022 via KL Studio Classics. The film, directed by Tomas Alfredson, co-starred Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, and John Hurt. It is most certainly worth noting that, aside from its three Academy Award nominations, this film was originally very well-received by critics. In fact, still to this date and at the time of writing, this still carries a “Certified Fresh” rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. However, it doesn’t need that badge stuck on the cover art, now, does it? Classy, Kino Lorber.

The movie has received a new 4K restoration, quoted below.

“New HDR Restoration by StudioCanal from the Original 4K DSM – Approved by Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema”

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range along with a 5.1 lossless surround sound and 2.0 Stereo sound mix, in a lossless form as well, on a BD-100 disc. The 4K UHD Blu-ray will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. The 2020 film The Dry is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on January 18th, 2022 via RLJE Films. The film, directed by Robert Connolly & based on a book by Jane Harper, from IFC Films, stars Eric BanaGenevieve O’ReillyKeir O’Donnell, and John Polson. It’s most certainly worth noting, at the time of writing, that this film is “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. Fellini film La Dolce Vita back on Blu-ray in February

The 1960 Italian film La Dolce Vita will officially be getting a standard Blu-ray Disc release on February 8th, 2022 via Paramount Home Entertainment. The film, co-written and directed by the legendary Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, starred Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée, and Yvonne Furneaux.

NOTE: The film had previously been released on the Blu-ray format, by The Criterion Collection, but that version has been OOP [out of print] for quite some time. So, that’s why I say that a standard release is coming. However, this is using the exact same restoration from 2011 from The Film Foundation. You can find more about that below, taken from the press release.

LA DOLCE VITA was restored in 2011 by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory in association with The Film Foundation, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale, Pathé, Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, Mediaset-Medusa, Paramount Pictures and Cinecittà Luce.”

The tech specs and bonus materials for the release have not yet been fully detailed but it is known that it will include a new video introduction by filmmaker Martin Scorsese, detailed below.

“The release will include a brand-new introduction by renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who shares his thoughts on the film and its indelible impact on cinema.”

Regarding tech specs, theoretically (based on the previous Criterion Blu-ray release), you can expect a Black & White 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and a lossless Mono sound mix. Halloween Kills gets Extended cut on 4K and Blu-ray

The 2021 sequel “Halloween Kills” will be getting an “Extended Cut” (as well as the Theatrical Cut) on its 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc release on January 11th, 2022 which is officially coming from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The film, co-written and directed by David Gordon Green and executive produced by John Carpenter, stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Anthony Michael Hall, Robert Longstreet, Dylan Arnold, Will Patton, Thomas Mann, Scott MacArthur, Michael McDonald, Jim Cummings, Kyle Richards, Nancy StephensMichael Smallwood, and Carmela McNeal.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range as well as Dolby Atmos sound, on a BD-100 disc. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Atmos sound on a BD-50 disc. The releases will both come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning the 4K will come with its Blu-ray counterpart, the Blu-ray will come with a DVD counterpart, and each will include a digital code (copy) of the film — compatible with Movies Anywhere.

1958 Orson Welles film Touch of Evil on 4K in February

The 1958 film noir Touch of Evil is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 15th, 2022 via KL Studio Classics, according to a social media post. The film, co-written & directed by, plus co-starring Orson Welles, starred Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff, and Joanna Moore.

This has received a new 4K restoration of the original Theatrical Cut, the “Reconstructed Cut,” and the “Preview Cut.” The tech specs for the release include a Black & White 2160p video presentation in Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range. Each version of the film should theoretically be receiving a lossless Mono sound mix — although they have not been detailed. Also, the aspect ratio has not been specified if it will be in the 1.37:1 negative or the 1.85:1 intended ratios. Stay tuned for an update on all of that hopefully soon? The release will span across a 3-disc set with one BD-100 (triple-layer 100 gigabytes) disc for each version of the film.

Rian Johnson film Looper is coming to 4K in February

The 2012 film Looper is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 15th, 2022 via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, written & directed by Rian Johnson, starred Bruce Willis, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, Garret Dillahunt, and Jeff Daniels. It’s also most definitely worth noting that this film, still to this day, is “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

The film has received a new 4K scan that was “reviewed and approved by the filmmakers” — according to the press release. The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and a new director-approved Dolby Atmos sound mix, along with the original DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film.

In fact, the director [Rian Johnson] just recently went as far as to actually discuss his approval of this upcoming 4K release in a tweet (seen below).
