1956 film The Court Jester with Danny Kaye on Blu-ray

– Amazon Commissions Earned –

The 1956 film “The Court Jester” starring Danny Kaye is officially making its debut to Blu-ray Disc on January 26th, 2021, via Paramount Presents. The release will be spine #13 in the Paramount Presents series. The film, directed by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, co-starred Glynis JohnsBasil Rathbone, Angela Lansbury, Cecil Parker, John Carradine, Mildred Natwick, and Alan Napier. The film has received a new 6K restoration which you can read a slight bit about below.

Originally released in 1956, THE COURT JESTER was shot in Paramount’s trademark “VistaVision” widescreen format, capturing a grander scope of information on the film negative. For this new restoration, the original negative was scanned at 6K and one of the “separation masters” was also scanned and recombined with the negative scans to address color fading in the negative.  The result is an incredibly vibrant picture that faithfully captures the colors and textures of Edith Head’s sensational costumes and Hal Pariera’s sparkling art direction.”

The tech specs for the release include a 1080p presentation in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a Mono DTS-HD Master Audio sound mix. The release will come with a digital copy of the film included. You can now find the upcoming Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. This, like all of the Paramount Presents releases, will come with a fold-out poster for the film in the slipcover packaging (as pictured below).

Bonus materials set to be included on the release are listed below.

  • A New Filmmaker Focus with film historian Leonard Maltin
  • Theatrical Trailer

The Original Kings of Comedy on Blu-ray in November

– Amazon Commissions Earned –

The 2000 stand-up comedy concert film The Original Kings of Comedy will be making its debut to the Blu-ray Disc format on November 10th via Paramount. The film, directed by Spike Lee, featured stand-up routines from Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric The Entertainer, and the late great Bernie Mac. It also featured glimpses into their lives backstage, in a documentary-type style.

This release will come in the form of a MOD (manufactured-on-demand) BD-ROM Blu-ray Disc if you order it via Amazon. However, if you find this on store shelves elsewhere or online elsewhere, it will be a pressed Blu-ray Disc. I was given this heads-up regarding the release as well as a very short bit of info as to what all went into the remastering of the film for this release. You can find a quote regarding that below.

“[This film was] recently remastered in HD, and was supervised by the film’s producer. It’s a BD-ROM now on Amazon MOD and pressed everywhere else. More Paramount catalog titles will be done this way and are coming very soon to Blu-ray.”

UPDATE: The tech specs for the release will include a 1080p HD video presentation in the original 1.78:1 aspect ratio with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound mix.

You can now find this film’s debut to Blu-ray available for preorder now over at Amazon. At the time of writing, no other retailers are listing the Blu-ray just yet but stay tuned for an update. Lastly, regarding bonus materials, here’s what Amazon lists regarding the product, which makes a nice mention of the film being on the format for the very first-time as well as gives us a hint of what to expect in terms of extras.

“FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU-RAY! FEATURING BONUS SCENES AND MUSIC VIDEO. Director Spike Lee, captures with a live audience, the massive hit “Kings of Comedy” tour over two rousing nights in Charlotte, North Carolina. Featuring the individual talents of Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric The Entertainer, and Bernie Mac, THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY—shot with style, heart, humor, and candid behind-the-scenes activities—is a front-row seat to the sold-out cultural phenomenon.”

Stephen King 5-Movie Collection Blu-ray coming

stephen_king_5-movie_collection_bluray– Amazon Commissions Earned –

It turns out, there will be a Stephen King 5-Movie Collection coming to the Blu-ray format on September 15th, via Paramount. This news comes via early retailer alerts. The collection includes the following TV mini-series and feature-length films:

  • “The Stand” (1994 TV Mini-Series)
  • “Pet Sematary” (1989)
  • “Pet Sematary” (2019)
  • “Silver Bullet” (1985)
  • “The Dead Zone” (1983) [New to Blu-ray]

Yes, that is including one David Cronenberg directed adaptation making its debut to the HD Blu-ray format, that happens to be one of my personal favorites. That said, I am not sure if there will be an individual release of “The Dead Zone” or not. Perhaps it could be exclusive to this set? We shall hopefully soon find out, but so far there’s no sign of it listed anywhere on retailers.

The five movies will all be included on their own individual Blu-ray Discs, making it a 5-disc set. Tech specs for the discs vary from film-to-film but I’ll try to be bringing you a full list of them soon. As for the tech specs on the new to Blu-ray release of “The Dead Zone” I cannot yet speak of those, but I will however be inquiring to a direct Paramount contact next week regarding this release and other topics pertaining to it. For instance, I will also hopefully have some info as to if any bonus materials will be included for The Dead Zone. In the meantime, you can now find the Blu-ray set available for preorder over at Amazon and Best Buy. Finally, one little note, based on the prices (as seen there at those two retailers) you can expect Amazon’s price to drop by a considerable bit, as well as be matched (via their “Pre-order Price Guarantee”). Stay tuned for further details about this upcoming release.
