1993 film The Remains of the Day on 4K in February

The 1993 film “The Remains of the Day” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 21st, 2023 via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.  The film, based on a novel (written by Kazuro Ishiguro) was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and was directed by James Ivory.  It starred Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Christopher Reeve, James Fox, and Peter Vaughan.

The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range along with Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 Stereo lossless sound mixes.  The release will not include a Blu-ray Disc counterpart.  It will contain a digital code (copy) of the film.

1991 film Dead Again is coming to Blu-ray in October

The 1991 film Dead Again is coming to Blu-ray Disc for the first time in North America on October 5th, via Paramount Home Entertainment, according to retail sources. The film, directed by Kenneth Branagh (also in the cast), starred Andy Garcia, Emma Thompson, Lois Hall, Richard Easton, Jo Anderson, Patrick Montes, Robin Williams, Wayne Knight, and Derek Jacobi.

UPDATE: The tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless surround sound. The bonus materials that are so far known to be included with the release are listed below.

Columbia Classics 4K Collection Volume 2 in October

There will be a Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Volume 2 coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 12th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The limited edition 6-film collection will include the following films:

  • “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959)
  • “Oliver!” (1968)
  • “Taxi Driver” (1976)
  • “Stripes” (1981)
  • “Sense and Sensibility” (1995)
  • “The Social Network” (2010)

These six different films spanning decades have all received 4K restorations and will be getting new sound mixes unless otherwise noted below. All of the films will be presented in 4K resolution with HDR10 form of high dynamic range. And, two films (“Taxi Driver” and “The Social Network”) will be presented in Dolby Vision form of HDR as well. All of the films with the exception of one (“Taxi Driver”) will also get new Dolby Atmos sound mixes as well as their original 5.1 and in some cases Mono lossless mixes. All of the details regarding those tech specs and such can be found a bit further below. All six films will get a digital code (copy) for each in 4K, via Movies Anywhere.

UPDATE: The release date has been pushed back yet again (to 10/12), from its originally slated 9/14 release. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray set available for preorder over at Amazon. Via that preorder listing, you can find a hi-res image glimpse at the interior of the packaging (seen below).

The release will come with some physical extras in the form of an 80-page booklet and a bonus Blu-ray Disc that will feature 20 classic Columbia Pictures shorts in HD for the first time, including “The Three Stooges – Disorder in the Court” from 1936. The booklet will include six essays about each of the films and are detailed below.

“… six all-new incisive essays from renowned writers Julie Kirgo, John Kenrick, Glenn Kenny, Michael G. McDunnah, Kayti Burt and Nev Pierce.”

The 2020 film “Dolittle” starring Robert Downey, Jr. is officially coming to both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on April 7th, via Universal. The film, based on the story of “Dr. Dolittle” & directed by Stephen Gaghan, co-starred/featured the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, and Marion Cotillard. The tech specs for the 4K include video in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range with Dolby Atmos sound. The tech specs for the Blu-ray include video in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound. 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast on 4K March

The 2017 live-action Disney film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 10th, via Disney, according to retailers. The film, directed by Bill Condon, featured a cast of Emma WatsonDan StevensLuke Evans, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson. Tech specs for the release have not yet been detailed but you can likely expect it to include HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound. Also, there’s no info regarding the bonus materials set to be included on the release, but stay tuned for updates on that. The 4K will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray counterpart and a digital code (copy of the film). You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray listed for preorder over at Amazon. It is certainly worth noting that Best Buy will be getting an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook release (pictured below) which is available for preorder.

“Johnny English Strikes Again” with Rowan Atkinson on Blu-ray in January

The 2018 sequel Johnny English Strikes Again starring Rowan Atkinson is coming to Blu-ray Disc on January 22nd, 2019 via Universal. The film, which was directed by David Kerr, co-stars Ben MillerOlga Kurylenko, Jake LacyEmma Thompson, Adam James, Kevin Eldon, Kendra Mei, and Michael Gambon. The tech specs for Blu-ray include 1080p video in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and DTS:X sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with a DVD and Digital Copy of the film included. The film on Blu-ray is now available for pre-order over at Amazon. Bonus materials set to be included on this release are listed below.
