Anime The First Slam Dunk comes to 4K in February

The 2022 Anime film “The First Slam Dunk will soon be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray. It will be released on February 18th via GKIDS and Shout! Studios. The Japanese animated film was written & directed by Takehiko Inoue. It’s certainly worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” (by critics) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with SDR (standard dynamic range) and Dolby Atmos in both Japanese and English languages. The release will come as a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder at Amazon. You can also preorder directly via the Shout! Anime One Piece Film Red gets a 4K SteelBook in November

The 2022 Anime “One Piece Film: Red” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on November 5th via Crunchyroll. The film, by TOEI Animation, was directed by Gorô Taniguchi. This film follows the “One Piece” Anime TV series from 1999 and is an alternate-language version of “One Piece: The Movie” (2000).

Tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and Japanese Dolby Atmos and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless surround sound. The release will come as a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. The included Blu-ray is locked to regions A and B. 2006 anime film Paprika comes to 4K in February

The 2006 Japanese animated [anime] film “Paprika” will be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a limited edition SteelBook on February 20th, via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, according to retailers.  The film, directed by Satoshi Kon, received countless awards & nominations as well as positive reviews from critics.  This film is “Certified Fresh” still over at Rotten Tomatoes.

Tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos Japanese sound, with English subtitles.  This release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film.  You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook available for preorder over at Amazon and Walmart.  The bonus materials for this release include all the previous Blu-ray extras along with the following.

Studio Ghibli film Earwig and the Witch on Blu-ray in April

The 2020 Studio Ghibli animated feature film “Earwig and the Witch” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc in North America on April 6th via GKIDS, distributed by Shout! Factory. The CG animated film, a first for the studio, was directed by Goro Miyazaki and features an English dub voice cast that includes Richard E. Grant, Kacey Musgraves, and Dan Stevens. The original Japanese language track will be included as well with this release, featuring English subtitles. Tech specs for the release have yet to be detailed but stay tuned for a possible update on that. The release will come as a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its DVD counterpart. Not only will there be a standard Blu-ray release, but there will also be a limited edition Blu-ray Disc SteelBook available (pictured below).

Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro on 4K in January

The 1979 Anime film “Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro” will officially be coming to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format in a “40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” release on January 26th, 2021, via Discotek Media. The film (AKA “Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro”), based on the Monkey Punch graphic novel series, was directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, best known for Japanese animated (Anime) films like “Spirited Away” (2001). The tech specs for the release include a presentation in 4K with HDR10 form of high dynamic range as well as both the original Japanese (with English subtitles) and English Dub audio mixes — in a format yet to be specified. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available to preorder over at Amazon. The upcoming physical 4K release will include the following bonus materials listed below.

1988 animated film Akira comes to 4K in December

The 1988 (Anime) Japanese animated film “Akira” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray, in a “Limited Edition” release, on December 22nd via Funimation. The film has received remastering of the 4K visuals and remixed sound, according to the statement from Funimation below:

“AKIRA, the crown jewel of anime and science fiction, returns with remastered 4K visuals and remixed audio.”

The exact tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray have yet to be detailed but it is known that the release will come with a Blu-ray Disc counterpart in the Limited Edition set. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray listed for preorder over at Amazon and directly via Funimation. The film, directed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, featured the (Japanese) voice talents of Mitsuo IwataNozomu Sasaki, and Mami Koyama. I’ll be updating the release as soon as I can get further details about the upcoming 4K Limited Edition. It’s unclear if this version will include both the original Japanese and the English language versions of the film and what audio format it will be in. It’s also not yet been confirmed to include High Dynamic Range, but we can hope that it at least will come with HDR10? And, hopefully soon, we shall soon find out if it will. In the meantime, it is known that the bonus materials on the release will consist of the following listed below.
