Richard Kelly film Donnie Darko finally comes to 4K in April

The 2001 Richard Kelly film “Donnie Darko” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a limited edition release on April 27th via Arrow Video. The distributor just announced this today via social media. The film, written & directed by Richard Kelly, starred Jake GyllenhaalJena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Holmes Osborne, Mary McDonnell, Daveigh Chase, James Duval, Patrick Swayze, Jolene Purdy, Stuart Stone, Gary Lundy, Seth Rogen, Beth Grant, Noah Wyle, and Drew Barrymore. Both the theatrical cut and the Director’s Cut of the movie have received new 4K restorations from the original camera negatives, which were supervised and approved by the director Richard Kelly and the DP (director of photography) Steven Poster. The tech specs for the 2-disc limited edition 4K release will include a 2160p presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, for both versions, in HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. UPDATE: The 4K UHD Blu-ray limited edition set is now available for preorder over at Amazon.

This limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray will come with the following physical extras (pictured below).

  • 100-page hardcover book featuring writing by Nathan Rabin, Anton Bitel and Jamie Graham, an in-depth interview with Richard Kelly, an introduction by Jake Gyllenhaal and contemporary coverage, illustrated with original stills and promotional materials

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly finally comes to 4K in April

The 1966 Sergio Leone directed spaghetti [Italian] western “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on April 27th via KL Studio Classics. The film starred Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach. The 4K release has been something that KL Studio Classics officially rumored (polled on) since 2017 and it’s now finally becoming a reality. The tech specs for the release include a video presentation in 2.35:1 aspect ratio without HDR (it seems) as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and newly restored DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono sound on a BD-100 (100 gigabytes) UHD Blu-ray Disc. The theatrical cut of the movie has received a 4K scan and color grading, as mentioned below.

“162-Minute Theatrical Cut – Over 30 hours of extensive shot-by-shot color grading and a 4K scan of a 1967 IB tech print as the secondary source to restore the theatrical cut to its original glory.
A) The optical flip ending in Tuco’s neck back around the noose (14 frames)
B) Tuco Shoving the “open/closed” sign into the storekeeper’s mouth (5 seconds, 10 frames)
C) An extreme closeup of Blondie’s eyes shortly before Tuco’s gang comes barging in through the door (1 second, 14 frames)

1980 film The Final Countdown on 4K UHD Blu-ray in April

The 1980 film “The Final Countdown” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on April 27th via Blue Underground. The film, directed by Don Taylor, starred Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, James Farentino, Katharine Ross, Ron O’Neal, and Charles Durning. This movie has received a new 4K scan in 16-bit from the original film 35mm camera negative and restoration (as noted below). It will be presented in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and include Dolby Atmos as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo sound mixes.

Studio Ghibli film Earwig and the Witch on Blu-ray in April

The 2020 Studio Ghibli animated feature film “Earwig and the Witch” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc in North America on April 6th via GKIDS, distributed by Shout! Factory. The CG animated film, a first for the studio, was directed by Goro Miyazaki and features an English dub voice cast that includes Richard E. Grant, Kacey Musgraves, and Dan Stevens. The original Japanese language track will be included as well with this release, featuring English subtitles. Tech specs for the release have yet to be detailed but stay tuned for a possible update on that. The release will come as a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its DVD counterpart. Not only will there be a standard Blu-ray release, but there will also be a limited edition Blu-ray Disc SteelBook available (pictured below).
