“Whiplash” with Miles Teller on 4K in September

The 2014 film “Whiplash“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 22nd, via Sony. The film, which was written & directed by Damien Chazelle, starred Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell, Chris Mulkey, and Suanne Spoke. We can tell by the art (pictured above) that the release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include the Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray listed for preorder over at Amazon. No other retailers yet have listed the title, but you can stay tuned to this post for any updates regarding this release.

UPDATE #1: This release has now been officially announced by the studio [Sony] today. The tech specs include 2160p 4K video in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range along with Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. The bonus materials set to be included on the release are listed below.

“Home Alone” comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray September

The 1990 film “Home Alone“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 15th, via Fox, in the 30th Anniversary Edition — according to multiple retailers. The film, which was directed by Chris Columbus & written by the late John Hughes, starred Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Catherine O’Hara, Roberts Blossom, and John Candy. The tech specs and bonus materials for the release have not yet been detailed, but stay tuned for an update on that once the studio [Fox] does an official announcement. The art (pictured above) tells us the release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with its original Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film included. That said, you can bet on getting all of the previous bonus materials from the original 2008 Blu-ray release. There’s no preorder listing for this 4K UHD Blu-ray yet over at Amazon but you can find it already listed over at retailer Best Buy, retailer Target, and online retailer Deep Discount. Finally, it’s certainly worth noting that there will be an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook for the film available over at retailer Best Buy. Sadly, the cover art for that hasn’t yet been unveiled.

“Mallrats” Special Edition Blu-ray in September

The 1995 film “Mallrats“ will be getting a “25th Anniversary Special Edition“ Blu-ray Disc release on September 29th, via Arrow Video. The film, written & directed by Kevin Smith, starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Renee Humphrey, Jason Mewes, Ethan Suplee, Priscilla Barnes, Michael Rooker, and the late great Stan Lee. The release will come with both the original theatrical cut and an extended cut, which have been restored and were approved by Kevin Smith and the film’s cinematographer David Klein. Tech specs for the release include 1080p HD video and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. You can now find the Special Edition Blu-ray is now available for preorder over at Amazon. Bonus materials set to be included on the 2-disc set, as well as the details and contents are listed below.

The 1993 film “Hocus Pocus” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 15th, via Disney, according to multiple retailer sources. The film, directed by Kenny Ortega and co-written by Mick Garris, starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Doug Jones. The tech specs and bonus materials for the release have not yet been detailed but stay tuned for an update. It is known, so far from the art, that the release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that the 4K will include a Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at retailers Best Buy, Target and Walmart — both showing the September release date. Also, online retailer Deep Discount now has the title available for preorder, again showing the same release date. There’s currently no preorder listing for the 4K yet over at Amazon but stay tuned for an update on that. Lastly, Disney has yet to officially announce this title but it is apparent that it is coming out based on retailers.

UPDATE: Our friend Den of Geeks just tweeted out the cover art (pictured below) for what will be an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook for the film available at retailer Best Buy, and there is now a preorder listing available.

Lastly, I’ve also heard (again, from a tweet), via someone with Disney, that this film has received a new scan which was supervised by the film’s director Kenny Ortega.

UPDATE: “Cinema Paradiso” on Blu-ray and 4K

The 1988 Italian film “Cinema Paradiso” is coming to Blu-ray Disc in a Special Edition and to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 24th, via Arrow Academy (Arrow Video). The film, which won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, was directed and co-written by Giuseppe Tornatore. Cinema Paradiso starred Philippe Noiret, Enzo Cannavale, and Antonella Attili.

UPDATE: It had originally been announced and slated for September but the release date for this title has now changed, as corrected and listed above, to November.

Tech specs for the Special Edition Blu-ray include 1080p HD video and uncompressed Linear PCM 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 surround audio mixes. The technical specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include 2160p video in HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range along with the same uncompressed Linear PCM 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 surround audio mixes. The Blu-ray version of the film comes with both the 124-minute theatrical version and the 174-minute Director’s Cut — on that release. Whereas, the 4K release will contain only the theatrical version on its disc and then the included Blu-ray will have the Director’s Cut (in just 1080p HD). One certainly would not go as far as to call what you get in the 4K set a “combo pack” — as it only includes one version of the film on the 4K disc and then one other version on the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray are both now available for preorder over at Amazon. Bonus materials and details regarding the releases are listed below after the break for each version.

David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man” on Blu-ray

The 1980 film “The Elephant Man“ directed by David Lynch is finally coming to Blu-ray Disc, via The Criterion Collection, on September 29th. The film starred Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, and Anne Bancroft. The release comes from a director-approved new 4K restoration of the film, which is presented in Black & white in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with an uncompressed (PCM) 2.0 Stereo sound mix. The Blu-ray is now available for preorder over at Amazon. The details about the release and a list of bonus materials set to be included can be found listed below.
