Nightmare Alley gets a Criterion 4K in October

The 2021 film Nightmare Alley is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 28th via The Criterion Collection. Guillermo del Toro directed and co-wrote the movie. It starred Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, and Willem Dafoe. It also co-starred Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, and David Strathairn. It’s worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, based on critics’ reviews.

The theatrical cut movie has received a 4K digital master. The tech specs for the 4K include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10, along with Dolby Atmos sound for the theatrical cut. Also, you’ll get a 4K digital master of “Nightmare Alley: Vision in Darkness and Light” (2025) on a separate 4K disc. This is “a new 159-minute, black-and-white extended director’s cut, supervised by director Guillermo del Toro.” The other 4K tech specs include a 2160p Black & White video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10, along with a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound mix.

This 4-disc release will come as a “combo pack” and include a 4K for each version of the film as well as a Blu-ray for each version of the film. You can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray now available for preorder at Amazon as well as directly via the Criterion website. The bonus materials set to be included with this release are listed in detail below.

Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 on Blu-ray in February

The 2024 film “Juror #2” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on February 4th via Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The film was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood. The cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Messina, Gabriel Basso, Zoey Deutch, Cedric Yarbrough, Leslie Bibb, Amy Aquino, and Adrienne C. Moore. It’s certainly worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” (by critics) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come with a digital copy, presumed compatible with Movies Anywhere. No bonus materials will be included with this release. The Sixth Sense and Signs come to 4K in October

The films “The Sixth Sense” (1999) and “Signs” (2002) are both officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 22nd via Hollywood Pictures and Touchstone Pictures (Disney). The films were both written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. “The Sixth Sense” starred Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, Olivia Williams, and Donnie Wahlberg. “Signs” starred Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin, and Cherry Jones. Notably, “The Sixth Sense” is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Below is some information about the restoration process the movies have received.

“The original negatives for both films were scanned at 4K resolution and restored in High Dynamic Range (HDR).”

The tech specs for The Sixth Sense on 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound, on a BD-100 disc. Tech specs for Signs on 4K include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound, on a BD-100 disc. Each release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included along with a digital copy.

UPDATE: The digital versions of the film include Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range. However, these physical media releases on 4K UHD Blu-ray will only include HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. So, you’ll have to watch the 4K digital versions you will get included to experience these films in Dolby Vision.

You can now find “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs” on 4K UHD Blu-ray both available for preorder at Amazon. I have just been informed by someone at Disney that the films each will include their legacy bonus materials from the previous Blu-ray releases which are included in the 4K UHD Blu-ray sets. 2104 film The Boxtrolls comes to 4K in February

The 2014 Laika Studios stop-motion animated film “The Boxtrolls” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in standard and 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook limited edition forms on February 28th via Shout! Factory.  The film, co-directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, featured the voice talents of Isaac Hempstead WrightBen Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Nick Frost, Tracy Morgan, Jared Harris, and Toni Collette.

The movie has received a new 4K restoration.  Tech specs will include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and a new Dolby Atmos sound mix.  The 4K releases of the film in standard and SteelBook form will both come as a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.  The bonus materials set to be included with the releases are listed below.

Krampus The Naughty Cut on 4K in December

The 2015 film Krampus will be getting a “Collector’s Edition” 4K UHD Blu-ray release featuring The Naughty Cut on December 7th, via Scream Factory (Shout! Factory). The film, directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty, starred Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Allison Tolman, Stefania LaVie Owen, Emjay Anthony, and David Koechner. Info regarding “The Naughty Cut” and how it differs from the theatrical cut of the film can be found in detail below.

“For the first time ever Michael’s Dougherty’s previously unseen “Naughty Cut” of the film will be seeing the light of day! This alternate version restores key dialogue and scenes that had to be trimmed from the original theatrical release to appease the MPAA. Supervised by filmmaker Michael Dougherty, this is the definitive version of the holiday cult classic!”

The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio, presumably with HDR10 form of high dynamic range (although yet confirmed) with the audio configuration and format not detailed yet either as well. Ari Aster film “Hereditary” comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray in September

The 2018 Ari Aster film “Hereditary” starring Toni Collette is coming to both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on September 4th via Lionsgate. The film is, at time of writing this, currently “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes. In fact it’s received quite some critical-acclaim so far.

UPDATE: Tech specs are as follows: The 4K UHD Blu-ray will receive full 2160p 4K video in the 2.00:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound, and both HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range. The Blu-ray will receive full 1080p HD video in the 2.00:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound. The Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray are both now available for PRE-ORDER.
