One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest comes to 4K

The 1975 film adaptation of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook and 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 11th via Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. Milos Forman directed the film based on the novel by Ken Kesey. It starred Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Brad Dourif, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Sydney Lassick, Scatman Crothers, William Redfield, and Will Sampson. This motion picture is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray feature a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, accompanied by HDR10, and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound and 2.0 Mono sound. Both releases will include a digital copy of the film, compatible with Movies Anywhere.

NOTE: The 2008 and 2010 Blu-ray releases of the movie only featured AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 lossy audio mixes. So, there has never been an HD release on home video that contained a lossless audio mix aside from that. That means that this will be the very first time you can hear the movie in true lossless 5.1 surround and the first time you can hear the original 2.0 mono, since DVD, and also in a lossless format. Also, the movie was incorrectly framed in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio instead of its intended 1.85:1 aspect. This will be the first time it’s been presented in that aspect ratio in HD or higher resolution.
In terms of bonus materials, it seems that this 4K release might not include some of the extras featuring Michael Douglas that were exclusively on the 2010 Blu-ray box set. It also appears that it may not include the original audio commentary with the film’s director, Milos Forman, and Producers, Michael Douglas & Saul Zaentz. That audio commentary was featured on the original 2008 Blu-ray and 2010 Blu-ray set.
Stay tuned for an update on this once Warner makes an official announcement for full clarity regarding the bonus materials. I’m going, right now, by what the back of the package art [HERE & HERE] shows. Perhaps they’ve yet again changed the names of the bonus materials, but kept the “Completely Cuckoo” featurette found on both releases.
F1: The Movie races to 4K and Blu-ray in October

The 2025 film “F1: The Movie” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, 4K UHD Blu-ray, and Blu-ray on October 7th via Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. Joseph Kosinski directed and co-wrote the movie. It stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Tobias Menzies. It’s worth noting that this flick is “Certified Fresh” by critics and “Verified Hot” by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, accompanied by Dolby Vision and HDR10, and Dolby Atmos sound, on a BD-100 disc. Technical specifications for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, accompanied by Dolby Atmos sound, on a BD-50 disc. The 4K and Blu-ray releases will each include a digital copy of the film.

The 2000 film U-571 comes to 4K in November

The 2000 film “U-571” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook and 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 11th via Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Jonathan Mostow directed and co-wrote the movie. It starred Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, David Keith, Jake Weber, and Jon Bon Jovi. The movie is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray consist of a 2160p video presentation in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10, accompanied by lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound, on a BD-100 disc. The 4K release(s) will include the Blu-ray Disc counterpart, making it a 2-disc “combo pack.“ A digital copy, compatible with Movies Anywhere, is also included.

TRON and TRON: Legacy on 4K on September 16th

The 1982 film “TRON“ and its sequel “TRON: Legacy“ (2010) are individually coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on September 16th via Disney. The first film [“TRON”] was directed and co-written by Steven Lisberger. It starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner. The second film [“TRON: Legacy”] was directed by Joseph Kosinski. It starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, and Michael Sheen.
The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray releases of each film include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.20:1 aspect (for the first film) and 2.35:1, shifting to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio (for IMAX footage of the second film), featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10, accompanied by Dolby Atmos sound. Each release will come as a 2-disc “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. Also, a digital copy of each film will be included. Here is some information about the restoration and remastering, taken from the press release just issued by Disney.
“TRON was digitally scanned and carefully restored by The Walt Disney Film Restoration team, who corrected dirt, warping, and other imperfections to ensure pristine image quality. The work was supervised by director Steven Lisberger. TRON: Legacy has been remastered in High Dynamic Range from the original digital sources under the supervision of director Joseph Kosinski. The TRON 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook and the TRON: Legacy 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook have listings now available for preorder at Walmart. They’ve apparently sold out, but stay tuned for an update.
Here is a glimpse at some 3840 x 2160 (4K resolution) images that Disney has provided press. They were originally in TIFF format and around 45MB each in size. I have converted them to lossless PNG format, and they’re still as large as 20MB or so. So, be patient loading these. Enjoy!

The “Back to the Future” trilogy and franchise will celebrate its 40th anniversary with new 4K UHD Blu-ray releases on November 4th via Universal Studios Home Entertainment. This will include a limited-edition 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured above) for each film, as well as a 4K UHD Blu-ray 40th Anniversary Trilogy, and a very limited-edition 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook 40th Anniversary Trilogy Giftset. That giftset (pictured further below) will be an exclusive at the retailer Amazon.
UPDATED: The release dates have been changed from October to November 4th. This new release date applies to all 40th anniversary edition releases.

The Quick and the Dead 4K SteelBook in October

The 1995 film “The Quick and the Dead” will get a 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook release on October 7th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Sam Raimi directed and produced the film. It starred Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It co-starred Keith David, Roberts Blossom, Kevin Conway, Lance Henriksen, Pat Hingle, Gary Sinise, and Tobin Bell.
This release will be to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. NOTE: This film has been previously released on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format, back in 2018. However, that release only included the HDR10 form of high dynamic range, and this will also include Dolby Vision for the first time on physical media. That being said, tech specs for 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10, accompanied by Dolby Atmos and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The 2-disc release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included, along with a digital copy compatible with Movies Anywhere.
