Underworld 5-Movie Collection comes to 4K in October

An Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection will officially be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 5th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. A total of four out of five of the films starred Kate Beckinsale, and the third film starred Rhonda Mitra. The set will include the following five films in the franchise:

  • “Underworld” (2003)
  • “Underworld: Evolution” (2006)
  • “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” (2009)
  • “Underworld: Awakening” (2012)
  • “Underworld: Blood Wars” (2016)

This will be the first time that 3 of the films have ever been available on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format, as the first and last films have been the only ones that were previously released. The tech specs for the releases of each of the films include 2160p presentations in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. The set will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that each film will include a Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as digital codes (copies) for each film.

Billy Crystal film Here Today comes to Blu-ray in August

The 2021 dramatic comedy Here Today starring Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on August 3rd via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, directed and co-written by Billy Crystal, and co-starred Penn Badgley, Laura Benanti, Louisa Krause, Anna Deavere Smith, and Nyambi Nyambi.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.

Columbia Classics 4K Collection Volume 2 in October

There will be a Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Volume 2 coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 12th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The limited edition 6-film collection will include the following films:

  • “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959)
  • “Oliver!” (1968)
  • “Taxi Driver” (1976)
  • “Stripes” (1981)
  • “Sense and Sensibility” (1995)
  • “The Social Network” (2010)

These six different films spanning decades have all received 4K restorations and will be getting new sound mixes unless otherwise noted below. All of the films will be presented in 4K resolution with HDR10 form of high dynamic range. And, two films (“Taxi Driver” and “The Social Network”) will be presented in Dolby Vision form of HDR as well. All of the films with the exception of one (“Taxi Driver”) will also get new Dolby Atmos sound mixes as well as their original 5.1 and in some cases Mono lossless mixes. All of the details regarding those tech specs and such can be found a bit further below. All six films will get a digital code (copy) for each in 4K, via Movies Anywhere.

UPDATE: The release date has been pushed back yet again (to 10/12), from its originally slated 9/14 release. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray set available for preorder over at Amazon. Via that preorder listing, you can find a hi-res image glimpse at the interior of the packaging (seen below).

The release will come with some physical extras in the form of an 80-page booklet and a bonus Blu-ray Disc that will feature 20 classic Columbia Pictures shorts in HD for the first time, including “The Three Stooges – Disorder in the Court” from 1936. The booklet will include six essays about each of the films and are detailed below.

“… six all-new incisive essays from renowned writers Julie Kirgo, John Kenrick, Glenn Kenny, Michael G. McDunnah, Kayti Burt and Nev Pierce.”

Labyrinth gets 35th Anniversary 4K release in August

The 1986 film “Labyrinth” will officially be getting a “35th Anniversary Edition” 4K UHD Blu-ray release on August 17th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, directed & co-written by Jim Henson and executive produced by George Lucas, featured a live-action cast that included David BowieJennifer ConnellyToby Froud, Shelley Thompson, and Christopher Malcolm and featured the voice talents of Shari Weiser, Brian Henson, and Dave Goelz.

This film has been available on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format since 2016, when it got another anniversary release, however, this new version on 4K will come with some new things. First off, the tech specs include a 2.39:1 aspect ratio 2160p video presentation from a 4K remaster with HDR10 and Dolby Vision (for the first time) as well as Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 theatrical, and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo sound.

The new 35th Anniversary 4K release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that you’ll get the Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film included.

UPDATE: as of now, you can find the 35th Anniversary Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. Also, it can be found listed for preorder over at retailer Target. This new release will come with the physical extra of being a DigiBook (digital booklet) that is 28 pages in length. It also will feature some new never-before-released extras and screentests. The bonus materials set to be included with this 2-disc 35th Anniversary Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray are listed below, disc-by-disc, in terms of their contents.

Stanley Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove gets a 4K in July

According to Amazon, the 1964 film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb is finally getting an individual 4K UHD Blu-ray release on July 6th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The reason I say finally getting an individual release for this title is that it was previously exclusively part of the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Volume 1 released back in June of 2020, and now long OOP (out of print). The film, directed by Stanley Kubrick, starred Peter Sellers (in numerous roles), George C. Scott, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, Peter Bull, James Earl Jones, Tracy Reed, and Sterling Hayden. The tech specs for the 4K release include a Black & White 2160p video presentation in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 Mono lossless sound mixes. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the individual 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. No official announcement regarding this release has been made yet by the studio [Sony] but stay tuned for an update and confirmation on that. The 2021 film “French Exit” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on June 15 via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, directed by Azazel Jacobs, stars Michelle PfeifferLucas Hedges, Valerie Mahaffey, Imogen Poots, Susan Coyne, Danielle MacDonald, Isaach de Bankolé, and Tracy Letts. The tech specs for the Blu-ray release include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. The Father starring Anthony Hopkins on Blu-ray in May

UPDATE: The 2020 film “The Father” is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on May 18th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film won two Academy Awards (including ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Actor’) out of the 6 “Oscars” total that it was nominated for last night. The Father was directed by Florian Zeller and stars Anthony HopkinsOlivia ColmanMark Gatiss, Olivia Williams, Imogen Poots, and Rufus Sewell. The film, at the time of writing, is “Certified Fresh” over at Rotten Tomatoes.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. The bonus materials set to be included with the Blu-ray are listed below.
