The 1963 film The Haunting is coming to 4K in May

The original 1963 version of “The Haunting“ will come to 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 26th via Scream Factory (Shout! Studios).

Robert Wise directed the motion picture. It starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn, Fay Compton, and Lois Maxwell. Its supporting cast included Rosalie Crutchley, Valentine Dyall, Diane Clare, and Ronald Adam.

The movie received a 4K restoration from the original camera negative. The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in Black & White and a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) high dynamic range. The audio will be presented in a lossless format; however, it has yet to be detailed which format(s).

The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, GRUV, and Walmart. The release will be a 2-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. On that Blu-ray, you will find most of the extras (bonus materials), which are listed below.

The 1995 film Outbreak is arriving on 4K in March

The 1995 film “Outbreak“ will be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 31st via Shout Select (Shout! Studios).

Wolfgang Petersen directed the motion picture. The movie starred Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kevin Spacey, Patrick Dempsey, and Donald Sutherland.

This has received a 4K transfer from the 35mm original camera negative. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) and lossless surround sound. The 2-disc set will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The Devil’s Advocate will arrive on 4K in March

The 1997 film “The Devil’s Advocate“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on March 10th via Scream Factory (Shout! Studios).

Taylor Hackford directed the movie, which starred Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. It co-starred Charlize Theron, Jeffrey Jones, Connie Nielsen, Craig T. Nelson, and Judith Ivey.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray have not yet been fully detailed, but you can expect a 2160p video presentation [in its original 2.39:1 aspect ratio] with (at least) HDR10 and lossless surround sound. The 2-disc release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. Also, the bonus materials have not yet been detailed, so stay tuned for an update. The Swordsman Trilogy on 4K and Blu-ray in March

“The Swordsman Trilogy“ will be released in a 4K UHD Blu-ray / Blu-ray set on March 3rd via Hong Kong Cinema Classics (Shout! Studios).

The trilogy, all directed (or co-directed by) Siu-Tung Ching, includes these films:

  • “Swordsman” (1990) in 4K UHD and HD
  • “Swordsman II” (1992) in HD
  • “Swordsman III: The East is Red” (1993) in HD

EDITORIAL NOTE: Only the first film in this trilogy will be presented in 4K UHD. It will also include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart in HD. The sequels will be presented in HD on Blu-ray Discs.

The first movie was co-directed by King Hu, Raymond Lee, and Hark Tsui. The cast for the first movie included Samuel Hui, Cecilia Yip, Jacky Cheung, Sharla Cheung, Siu-Ming Lau, and Fennie Yuen. The second film’s cast included Jet Li, Brigitte Lin, Michelle Reis, Waise Lee, Rosamund Kwan, Shi-Kwan Yen, and Fennie Yuen. The cast for the third movie included Brigitte Lin, Joey Wang, Rongguang Yu, and Jean Wang.

The first movie received a 4K scan from the original camera negative. The tech specs for the first film include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) form of high dynamic range and Cantonese [and English dubbed] lossless DTS-HD Master Audio Mono, with English subtitles. Tech specs for the other two films on Blu-ray (as well as the first) include a 1080p HD video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, along with Cantonese & English DTS-HD MA Mono sound, with English subtitles.

The 2014 film Nightcrawler comes to 4K in February

The 2014 film “Nightcrawler” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on February 17th via Shout! Studios. Dan Gilroy wrote and directed the motion picture. It starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Riz Ahmed. It’s worth noting that this movie is still “Certified Fresh” based on critics’ reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie has received a 4K scan. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) and Dolby Atmos sound. The 2-disc release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The 1988 film “The Big Heat” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 10th via Hong Kong Cinema Classics / Shout! Studios. The movie was co-directed by Yeung-Wah Kam, Johnnie To, and Hark Tsui [uncredited]. It starred Waise Lee, Matthew Wong, Kwok Tsui, and Lo King Wah. It co-starred Chu Kong, Stuart Ong, Mak Tsu Han, Peter Lai, and Joey Wong. This will be spine number 27 in the HKCC (Hong Kong Cinema Classics) line.

This comes from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible), accompanied by lossless Cantonese and English (dubbed) DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono sound. The 2012 film “End of Watch“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on January 20th via Shout! Studios. David Ayer directed, produced, and wrote the movie. It starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, David Harbour, Natalie Martinez, Frank Grillo, and America Ferrera. It’s certainly worth noting that, still to this day, the movie carries a “Certified Fresh” rating based on critics’ reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.

Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). The audio format(s) have yet to be announced, but stay tuned for an update. I’ve even gone as far as to reach out to the director, but I’ll also try asking Shout! Studios. This will be a 2-disc set and come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart.
