Moneyball celebrates 15th anniversary on 4K in April

Bennett Miller directed the film from a screenplay co-written by Aaron Sorkin. The movie was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards (Oscars), including “Best Picture.” It starred Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The supporting cast included Robin Wright, Chris Pratt, and Brent Jennings.

The movie has received a 4K presentation approved by the director, Bennet Miller. The tech specs include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with SDR (standard dynamic range) and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.

The 1997 film Boogie Nights on 4K in December

The tech specs for the 4K release(s) include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 high dynamic range and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. No Dolby Vision will be included here. The 4K releases will each include a digital copy, compatible with Movies Anywhere.

Strangers with Candy: The Movie on Blu-ray in July

The 2005 film “Strangers with Candy: The Movie” comes to Blu-ray Disc on July 22nd via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). Paul Dinello directed and co-wrote the movie. It starred Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Deborah Rush, Ian Holm, Joseph Cross, and Carlo Alban. The cast even included Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Chris Pratt, and the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman. The movie, based on the 1999 TV series “Strangers with Candy,” is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This will be spine number #196 in the Shout Select series.

The movie has been newly restored with a new 4K transfer from the 35mm interpositive. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo lossless sound.

The 1992 film “Scent of a Woman” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 27th, via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). This release will be a “combo pack,” with the Blu-ray counterpart included, and is a “Collectors Edition.” Martin Brest directed the film which starred Al Pacino, Chris O’Donnell, James Rebhorn, Gabrielle Anwar, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The movie has received a new 4K scan from the original camera negative supervised by Director Martin Brest. The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 stereo lossless sound. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 stereo sound.

Criterion brings Punch-Drunk Love to 4K in February

The 2002 film “Punch-Drunk Love” will be released on 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 4th via The Criterion Collection. The film was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It starred Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Luis Guzmán, and Mary Lynn Rajskub. It’s worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie has received a 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Paul Thomas Anderson. The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound. Sony Pictures Classics 4K set coming in November

The “Sony Pictures Classics 30th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Collection” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 22nd via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.  This limited edition box set includes a total of eleven Sony Pictures Classics films, listed below (in chronological order):

  • “Orlando” (1992)
  • “The Celluloid Closet” (1995)
  • “The City of Lost Children” (1995)
  • “SLC Punk!” (1998)
  • “Run Lola Run” (1998)
  • “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000)

The tech specs for the films include 2160p video presentations with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range.  The films vary in their Audio configurations but start with DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo and then go to DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround as well as on “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” not only do you get 5.1 but also a new Dolby Atmos sound mix — as well as Dolby Vision for the first time.  NOTE:  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had previously been released on 4K UHD Blu-ray in 2016 with HDR10 and 5.1 surround.  So, a total of 10 out of 11 of these films are exclusive to this box set.

Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous comes to 4K in July

The 2000 film Almost Famous is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a limited edition SteelBook on July 13th via Paramount Home Entertainment. The film, both written and directed by Cameron Crowe, starred Patrick FugitKate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, Anna Paquin, Zooey Deschanel, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jimmy Fallon, and Frances McDormand.

UPDATE: So, as I promised you before, today Paramount has officially announced the upcoming releases of this film. Yes, releases, plural. You’ll hear more about the Blu-ray via Paramount Presents, spine #21 in the series, a bit further below. First off though, let’s discuss the 4K UHD Blu-ray limited-edition SteelBook. Tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio. The movie has been remastered from a new 4K transfer that was supervised by Cameron Crowe. The 4K release will be a 2-disc set with both The Theatrical Cut (available for the first time) on the first disc and “The Bootleg Cut” on the second disc.
