TRON and TRON: Legacy on 4K on September 16th

The 1982 film “TRON“ and its sequel “TRON: Legacy“ (2010) are individually coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook on September 16th via Disney. The first film [“TRON”] was directed and co-written by Steven Lisberger. It starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner. The second film [“TRON: Legacy”] was directed by Joseph Kosinski. It starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, and Michael Sheen.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray releases of each film include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.20:1 aspect (for the first film) and 2.35:1, shifting to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio (for IMAX footage of the second film), featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10, accompanied by Dolby Atmos sound. Each release will come as a 2-disc “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. Also, a digital copy of each film will be included. Here is some information about the restoration and remastering, taken from the press release just issued by Disney.

“TRON was digitally scanned and carefully restored by The Walt Disney Film Restoration team, who corrected dirt, warping, and other imperfections to ensure pristine image quality. The work was supervised by director Steven Lisberger. TRON: Legacy has been remastered in High Dynamic Range from the original digital sources under the supervision of director Joseph Kosinski. Meticulously remastered, both films transport audiences back to the digital frontier with an experience more immersive, dynamic, and visually spectacular than ever before.”

The TRON 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook and the TRON: Legacy 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook have listings now available for preorder at Walmart. They’ve apparently sold out, but stay tuned for an update.

Here is a glimpse at some 3840 x 2160 (4K resolution) images that Disney has provided press. They were originally in TIFF format and around 45MB each in size. I have converted them to lossless PNG format, and they’re still as large as 20MB or so. So, be patient loading these. Enjoy!

2013 Ron Howard film Rush arrives on 4K in November

The 2013 film “Rush” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 19th via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). The film, directed by Ron Howard, starred Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Pierfrancesco Favino. It’s worth noting that this film is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range along with Dolby Atmos, as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and 2.0 Stereo audio. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder at Amazon. Cowboys and Aliens on 4K UHD Blu-ray in September

The 2011 film “Cowboys & Aliens” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 17th via KL Studio Classics. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, starred Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Paul Dano, Clancy Brown, Keith Carradine, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Walter Goggins, Abigail Spencer, and Wyatt Russell.

Tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with SDR (standard dynamic range) and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-HD Master 2.0 Stereo lossless sound, on a BD-100 disc. The tech specs for the Blu-ray will include a 1080p HD video presentation in 2.39:1 with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and DTS-HD Master 2.0 Stereo sound, on a BD-50 disc. The release will come as a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. The 4K disc will contain the theatrical cut (119 minutes) and the Blu-ray will feature the “Extended Cut” (135 minutes).

The 4K UHD Blu-ray will NOT include any form of high dynamic range and the folks at KL Studio Classics have discussed this choice on social media, specifically on X, as quoted below.

“So before everyone asks, the master was created from the original DI master, we tried to create a HDR/Dolby Vision master, but ran into many issues that could not be resolved, we dropped the Dolby Vision to see if it would make a difference, but it didn’t. So our 2 choices were to either release it on 4K using a UHD SDR master or cancel the release altogether, we think we made the right choice.”

“A Vigilante” with Olivia Wilde on Blu-ray in May

The 2019 Sarah Daggar-Nickson film “A Vigilante“ starring Olivia Wilde is officially coming to Blu-ray Disc on May 28th, via Lionsgate. This movie currently (at time of writing) has a 91% rating based on critics reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include 1080p HD video in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound. You can find the Blu-ray available to pre-order now over at Amazon and Best Buy. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with a DVD and a digital copy of the film. The only bonus material set to be included is a featurette listed below.
