George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead on 4K in June

The 1985 film “Day of the Dead“ is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in a 4-Disc “Collector’s Edition” on June 16th via Scream Factory [Shout! Studios].

George A. Romero wrote and directed this modern-day horror classic. It starred Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato, Jarlath Conroy, Anthony Dileo Jr., Richard Liberty, Sherman Howard, and Gary Howard Klar.

The movie has been fully restored. In fact, it has received a 4K restoration for the interpositive. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10-compatible) high dynamic range, along with Dolby Atmos, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround, and 2.0 dual-channel Mono sound. An isolated score-and-sound-effects mix will also be available.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray set is now available for preorder at Amazon. You can also preorder at online retailer GRUV. The 4-disc Collector’s Edition will be a “combo pack” featuring its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included, along with two additional Blu-ray Discs containing bonus material. The release will come in a rigid packaging and include two separate cases for the 4K UHD Blu-ray / Blu-ray and the bonus Blu-ray discs. Some other physical extras will be included, pictured below.

The 1971 film Wake in Fright comes to 4K in June

The 1971 film “Wake in Fright” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray in Limited Edition set(s) via Arrow Video on June 30th. The releases will be distributed stateside by MVD Entertainment Group.

Ted Kotcheff directed and co-wrote the screenplay adaptation, based on a novel of the same title. The movie starred Donald Pleasence, Gary Bond, Chips Rafferty, Sylvia Kay, Jack Thompson, Al Thomas, Peter Whittle, Nancy Knudsen, and John Meillon.

The movie is presented “here in a definitive 4K restoration.” The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10-compatible) high dynamic range and lossless Mono sound. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation and lossless Mono sound.

The 1984 autobiography “George Stevens: A Filmmaker’s Journey“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on April 28th via Warner Archive (Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment).

George Stevens, Jr. directed and wrote the documentary. It features interviews with Fred Astaire, Warren Beatty, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Rock Hudson, Alan Ladd, Spencer Tracy, Frank Capra, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Elizabeth Taylor, Max von Sydow, Shelley Winters, Hal Roach, and many others.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) high dynamic range with lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono sound, on a BD-66 disc. The release will come as a 2-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

The 1963 romantic comedy/mystery “Charade” will get a 4K UHD Blu-ray release on June 2nd via The Criterion Collection.

Stanley Donen directed the movie. It starred Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy.

The movie has received a new 4K digital restoration. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with SDR (standard dynamic range) and uncompressed LPCM Mono sound. This release is a 2-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

NOTE: HDR (high dynamic range) will NOT be included with this release. This is not uncommon for some Criterion 4K releases.

The 1970 film “Hi, Mom!“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in Limited Edition on May 19th via Radiance Films, distributed stateside by MVD Entertainment Group.

Brian De Palma co-wrote and directed the movie, which starred Robert De Niro. It co-starred Charles Durning, Allen Garfield, Jennifer Salt, Paul Bartel, and Gerrit Graham.

The movie has received a 4K restoration from the original camera negative. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10-compatible) high dynamic range and uncompressed Linear PCM Mono sound. The 1983 stand-up comedy TV special “Richard Pryor… Here and Now“ is set to be released on 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 24th via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

It’s most certainly worth noting that Richard Pryor actually directed the special himself, which he co-wrote with the late great Paul Mooney.

The tech specs on 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision (HDR10-compatible) high dynamic range and lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono sound, on a BD-66 disc. It seems no digital code (copy) or bonus materials will be included on this release.
