1983 film The Outsiders is coming to 4K in November

Amazon Commissions Earned

The 1983 film The Outsiders will officially be getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray release on November 9th, via Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (stateside) and Studiocanal (in the UK). The film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, has received a new 4K restoration by his company American Zoetrope. This new 4K restoration includes a new extended version “The Outsiders: The Complete Novel” as well as the original theatrical cut — using the original camera negatives. Below you can find a quote by the filmmaker regarding this new cut of the movie.

Said Coppola, ‘“The Outsiders The Complete Novel’ came about after meeting students over the years who repeatedly asked me why certain scenes from S.E. Hinton’s wonderful book were missing from the theatrical version. These questions reminded about my inspiration for the film—in 1980, a contingent of 12- to 14-year-old students wrote and asked me to make it. I listened to those young fans back then, and I continue to listen to young people now and believe in their opinions, so this complete film version of the novel is for them.”

The film, based on the S.E. Hinton novel, starred C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray release have not yet been fully detailed but it is known you can expect both versions of the film with HDR10, spanning across a 4-disc set. That being said, one would assume this will be a “combo pack” with a Blu-ray included of the film (perhaps one each for both cuts) and one just for bonus materials? That last bit has not yet been confirmed or detailed, so that’s just based on speculation of what will fill the 4 discs.

UPDATE: You can now find the artwork (pictured further above) and the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon and retailer Target.

It is known that a digital copy of the film will be included with the release. The bonus materials set to be included on the 4K release have already been detailed and are listed fully below.
