Blaxploitation Classics Vol. 1 comes to 4K in May

“Blaxploitation Classics Vol. 1” will be released on 4K UHD Blu-ray on May 20th via Shout Select (Shout! Studios). This release will include a total of six films in a 12-disc set.

The release will come as a “combo pack” with each 4K receiving its Blu-ray Disc counterpart. All of the films have received new 4K scans and restorations. The tech specs on the 4K release feature a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio for each film. They include Dolby Vision (or HDR10) and DTS-HD Master Audio Mono sound. Tech specs for the Blu-ray versions include a 1080p HD video presentation in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio for each film and DTS-HD Master Audio Mono.

Blaxploitation Classics Vol. 1 | Synopsis

“Coffy” (1973)

“Sheba, Baby” (1975)

“Truck Turner” (1974)

The 2000 film Reindeer Games on 4K in January

The 2000 film “Reindeer Games” will be released in two formats. It will be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Special Edition Blu-ray Disc. The release date is January 14th via KL Studio Classics. The film was directed by John Frankenheimer. It starred Ben AffleckCharlize Theron, and Gary Sinise. It also featured Dennis FarinaClarence Williams IIIIsaac Hayes, and Danny Trejo. Further roles included Donal Logue and James Frain.

The movie’s theatrical cut has received a new 4K master from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation of the theatrical cut in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround and lossless 2.0 sound, on a BD-100 disc. The tech specs for the Special Edition Blu-ray include a 1080p video presentation of the Director’s Cut in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 lossless sound, on a BD-50 disc. The Director’s Cut comes from an HD master. The 4K release will come as a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.

1971 film Shaft on 4K via Criterion Collection in June

The 1971 film “Shaft” will officially be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on June 21st via The Criterion Collection.  The film, directed by Gordon Parks, starred Richard Roundtree, Moses Gunn, Charles Cioffi, Christopher St. John, Gwenn Mitchell, Lawrence Pressman, and Victor Arnold.  The film has received a new 4K restoration.

Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and uncompressed Mono and Stereo sound.  The tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect and uncompressed Mono and Stereo sound.  On both releases, the first sound mix will be the original Mono lossless mix while the second optional sound mix will be a Stereo lossless “soundtrack remastered with creative input from Isaac Hayes III” according to Criterion.

1996 horror film Uncle Sam comes to 4K in June

The 1996 horror film Uncle Sam is officially coming to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format on June 21st via Blue Underground.  The film, directed by William Lustig and written by the late Larry Cohen, starred Bo Hopkins, Timothy Bottoms, Robert Forster, P.J. Soles, William Smith, and Isaac Hayes.

This comes from a new 4K restoration, as noted below.

“… UNCLE SAM in a sparkling new 25th Anniversary restoration, scanned in 4K 16-bit from the original 35mm camera negative, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, loaded with illuminating Extras!”

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos as well as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound.  NOTE: This release only includes a 4K disc and not the Blu-ray Disc.

Escape from New York gets 4K stateside release in May

The 1981 film Escape from New York will officially be getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray “Collector’s Edition” release on May 17th via Scream Factory in the US (United States).  The film, directed by John Carpenter, starred Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins.

UPDATES:  The tech specs include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and likely Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range as well as some lossless audio mix, although yet specified.  This will be using the Studiocanal 4K restoration.  It is known (via the artwork, pictured above) that this release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the 4K getting its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.  The 4K UHD Blu-ray Collector’s Edition is now available for preorder over at Amazon.
