1988 John Carpenter film “They Live” on 4K December

The 1988 John Carpenter film“They Live” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on December 8th via Scream Factory. NOTE: This marks the very first 4K release from Shout! Factory in their Scream Factory collection. The John Carpenter directed film starred Roddy PiperKeith David, and Meg Foster. Tech specs for the release include a 2160p presentation with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart. If you all remember, I had posted last week that this release was rumored to be coming soon. Turns out that rumor was true.

UPDATE: The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder over at Amazon. Keep in mind that it’s at MSRP (manufacturers’ suggested retail price) right now and should drop in its price over time. Also, keep in mind that Amazon features a “Pre-order Price Guarantee.” So, if it drops in price before the release date, they’ll refund you the difference.

1990 film Total Recall 4K UHD Blu-ray December

The 1990 film adaptation of Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on December 8th via Lionsgate, distributing for Studiocanal. The film, celebrating its 30th anniversary, has received a new 4K restoration, as you can find detailed below.

“Restored in 4K from a scan of the original 35mm negative” […] “Undertaken by STUDIOCANAL, the restoration was supervised by Paul Verhoeven himself. The restoration crew paid particularly high attention to preserving special-effects continuity, as Total Recall was one of the earliest films to use computer-generated images for special effects winning the Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects at the 1990 Academy Awards®.”

The film, directed by Paul Verhoeven & based on Philip K. Dick’s short story, co-starred Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, and Michael Ironside. Tech specs for the release include a 2160p presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come in a 3-disc set, making it a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy) of the film, as well as a Blu-ray bonus disc full of extras. Those discs and their contents are detailed below.

A Rambo: The Complete SteelBook Collection is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on October 27th via Lionsgate. The set will include the following films in the “Rambo” franchise, starring Sylvester Stallone:

  • “First Blood” (1982)
  • “Rambo: First Blood Part II” (1985)
  • “Rambo III” (1988)
  • “Rambo” (2008)
  • “Rambo: Last Blood” (2019)

The set has received some new artwork for each film, as detailed below:

For the first time in its 37-year history, the Rambo series is coming home as a complete SteelBook® set – with original art by some of today’s most celebrated illustrators! Rambo: The Complete SteelBook Collection arrives on 4K Ultra HDTM October 27 from Lionsgate. This definitive collector’s edition of the legendary series features five uniquely designed SteelBooks by celebrated artists Justin Erickson, Ken Taylor, Grzegorz Domaradzki, Vance Kelly, and John Guydo, housed in a custom SteelBook case.

The tech specs for the films vary a tad here, across all five films. First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Rambo III will be in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. Rambo will be in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. Rambo: Last Blood will be in the 2.40:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. Each film will include its Blu-ray Disc counterpart and a digital code (copy). Bonus materials will be identical to those found on the previous individual releases.

Weathering With You 4K UHD Blu-ray November

The 2019 Japanese animated film “Weathering With You” will be receiving a 4K physical release in the “Deluxe Limited Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray Disc set on November 17th via Shout! Factory / GKIDS. As mentioned this set will notably include an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc in the 4-disc set, as well as the Blu-ray Disc. Plus, there will be a Blu-ray bonus disc, the original CD soundtrack, a 104-page booklet, a mini-poster, and a decal sticker (pictured further below). The film, written & directed by Makoto Shinkai, features an English dub voice cast that includes Brandon Engman, Ashley BoettcherLee Pace, Alison Brie, and Riz Ahmed. This collector’s edition set will feature the same tech specs for the Blu-ray: a 1080p presentation in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with both English & Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound mixes. The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p 4K presentation in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range as well as both English & Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound mixes. The bonus materials, in addition to those found on the standard Blu-ray releases (coming September), will include further materials that have just been finalized — as I was told by the folks at Shout! Kubrick 3-Film Collection on 4K in September

A set called the Stanley Kubrick 3-Film 4K Collection is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 22nd featuring three of the late director’s classic films, via Warner. The 7-disc set will include the following films, two of which were both previously released and then the third will be coming out the very same day (also individually):

  • “The Shining” (1980)
  • “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968)
  • “Full Metal Jacket” (1987)

The tech specs for the releases are as follows. All will be presented in the 2160p 4K resolution with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and get DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. One film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, will get HDR10+ form of High Dynamic Range in addition to the two other forms. Aspect ratios are as follows, The Shining in 1.78:1 aspect ratio (mislabeled 1.85:1), 2001: A Space Odyssey in 2.20:1 ratio, and finally Full Metal Jacket in 1.78:1 (mislabeled 1.85:1). Each of the films will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart but 2001: A Space Odyssey will also include an additional bonus disc. All three films will get a digital code (copy) of them included as well, making each of them a “combo pack” by definition. Their bonus materials will be identical to those found on the standard individual 4K UHD Blu-ray releases.
