Shin Godzilla comes to 4K and Blu-ray in October

The 2016 film “Shin Godzilla” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, and Blu-ray, reportedly in October via GKIDS (distributed by Shout! Studios). Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno co-directed the film. The movie has received a new 4K remaster.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range. It will also include the original Japanese language in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 3.1 (with English subtitles) as well as the English dub, also in DTS-HD MA 3.1 sound. The 4K will be presented on a BD-100 disc. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio and both Japanese and English DTS-HD MA 3.1 sound, with English subtitles, on a BD-50 disc. The 4K UHD Blu-ray will come as a 3-disc “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included, as well as a second Blu-ray for bonus materials. The Blu-ray will come as a 2-disc set with a second Blu-ray for extras.

You can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, and Blu-ray now available for preorder at online retailer GRUV. These are not yet available at Amazon for preorder, but stay tuned for an update. Additionally, you can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook, and Blu-ray available to preorder at retailer Walmart.

Deluxe Collector’s Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray / Blu-ray

There will also be a 4-disc 4K UHD Blu-ray Deluxe Collector’s Edition available (directly via Godzilla.com website), which is now available for preorder. This will include an additional Blu-ray featuring the ORTHOchromatic version of the film (in HD), and some physical extras as well. Those details about the 4th “Black Disc” are below.

Godzilla Minus One on 4K and Blu-ray in November

The 2023 film “Godzilla: Minus One” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on November 19th via TOHO & Studio Distribution Services. The film, co-written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, and Hidetaka Yoshioka. It’s certainly worth noting that the film is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision and HDR10 forms of high dynamic range and Japanese Dolby Atmos and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless surround. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and Dolby Atmos (Japanese) and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English). All of the releases include English subtitles for the Japanese audio mix. The 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray are now available for preorder at Amazon. Also, you can find preorder listings for the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray at online retailer GRUV. And, the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray are available for preorder at retailer Walmart.

It’s also worth noting that there will be a 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured below) that will be released on November 19th as well. It was available for preorder at Amazon and other retailers but has since sold out. Stay tuned for any updates regarding the 4K SteelBook’s availability.

The 1954 film Godzilla on 4K via Criterion in November

The 1954 film “Godzilla” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on November 5th via The Criterion Collection. The movie, originally titled “Gojira” in Japan, was directed by Ishirô Honda.

This has received a new 4K digital restoration. The tech specs for the 4K release include a Black & White 2160p video presentation in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio in SDR (standard dynamic range) with Japanese Uncompressed PCM Mono sound. This includes English subtitles. HDR (high dynamic range) will not be included in this release. The release will come as a “combo pack” with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included. The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder at Amazon and direct via Criterion’s website. The bonus materials set to be included with the release are listed below.

  • High-definition digital restoration of Godzilla, King of the Monsters, Terry Morse’s 1956 reworking of the original, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 4K and Blu-ray

The 2019 film “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on August 27th via Warner. The film, directed by Michael Dougherty, stars Kyle ChandlerVera FarmigaMillie Bobby Brown, Thomas Middleditch, and Ken Watanabe. Tech specs for the 4K release include 2160p video in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range as well as Dolby Atmos sound. NOTE: This is the first 4K title Warner has released with the HDR10+ form of HDR – as discussed HERE by John Archer of Forbes. The technical specifications for the Blu-ray include 1080p HD video in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and presumably the same Dolby Atmos sound? The press release didn’t mention but feel free to inform me if that’s not the case. Both releases will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the 4K getting a Blu-ray, the Blu-ray getting a DVD, and both receiving a digital code (digital copy) of the film. Both the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray are now available to pre-order over at Amazon. Bonus materials set to be included on the two released are listed below.
