“Jaws” officially comes to 4K UHD Blu-ray in June

The classic 1975 film Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on June 2nd, according to a full press release just issued by Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The film, a winner of a total of three Academy Awards (“Oscars”), starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, and Murray Hamilton. The new 45th Anniversary Limited Edition of the film on 4K will be available in various forms including a collectible lenticular packaging with a 44-page booklet (pictured below in high resolution).

First, the tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ forms of High Dynamic Range along with Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that it will also include the Blu-ray Disc and a digital code (copy) of the film. “The Invisible Man” 2020 on 4K and Blu-ray May

The 2020 version of “The Invisible Man” is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc on May 26th, via Universal, according to retailers. The film, directed by Leigh Whannell & produced by Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse, stars Elisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet Dyer, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, and Michael Dorman. The film received a very good response from both film critics and moviegoers, in fact, it carries a “Certified Fresh” rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Tech specs for the 4K release include video presented in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ forms of High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound on a BD-100 (100 gigabytes) disc. The technical specs for the Blu-ray release include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio and Dolby Atmos sound. Both versions of the film (on home video) will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that the 4K will be getting its Blu-ray counterpart, the Blu-ray will be getting a DVD, and each includes a digital code (copy of the film). “Columbia Classics” Volume 1 set on 4K in June

BREAKING: Six well-known films have all been restored in 4K and will be getting an exclusive release on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format via what is being called the Columbia Classics: 4K Ultra HD Collection – Volume 1 box set, which is set for a June 16th release, via Sony. The set, a limited-edition collection, will be literally limited with only what is said to be fewer than 8 thousand units produced — as quoted below from the press release:

The six films in the COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION are only available on 4K Ultra HD disc within this special collector’s set with a limited-edition run of fewer than 8,000 units in the U.S

This 4K box set includes the following films:

  • “A League of Their Own” (1992)
    • directed by Penny Marshall
  • “Dr. Stranglelove: Or How…” (1964)
    • directed by Stanley Kubrick
  • “Gandhi” (1982)
    • directed by Richard Attenborough
  • “Jerry Maguire” (1996)

UPDATE: I have now talked with the folks at Sony and have the full details on this release for you, via an extremely lengthy press release that you’ll be able to read in its entirety, further below after the break. The tech specs for the films include 4K video with HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range and a variety of Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio sound mixes on the six different films. Lastly, regarding tech specs, it is worth noting that the film Gandhi will actually receive Dolby Vision and HDR10, in terms of video. RUMOR: “Birds of Prey” on 4K and Blu-ray May

The 2020 film “Birds of Prey” starring Margot Robbie, as “Harley Quinn”, appears to be coming to physical media on both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc, via Warner, on May 12th – according to retailers. This comes after the film was recently released early digitally when theaters closed during these strange times we currently are living in. The film, directed by Cathy Yan, co-stars Rosie PerezMary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Chris Messina, and Ewan McGregor. The tech specs for the releases have not yet been detailed but it is believed that the 4K will receive both HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range as well as Dolby Atmos sound. The 4K it is known from the artwork (pictured above) will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the Blu-ray and a digital code (copy) of the film included. So far, that’s all based on retail sources and has not yet been officially announced by the studio (Warner), making it technically a RUMOR. It’s worth noting you can find the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray as well as over at retailer Best Buy, who will be getting an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook (pictured below), also now available for preorder.
