A set called the “Stanley Kubrick 3-Film 4K Collection“ is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 22nd featuring three of the late director’s classic films, via Warner. The 7-disc set will include the following films, two of which were both previously released and then the third will be coming out the very same day (also individually):
“The Shining” (1980)
“2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968)
“Full Metal Jacket” (1987)
The tech specs for the releases are as follows. All will be presented in the 2160p 4K resolution with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and get DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound. One film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, will get HDR10+ form of High Dynamic Range in addition to the two other forms. Aspect ratios are as follows, The Shining in 1.78:1 aspect ratio (mislabeled 1.85:1), 2001: A Space Odyssey in 2.20:1 ratio, and finally Full Metal Jacket in 1.78:1 (mislabeled 1.85:1). Each of the films will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart but 2001: A Space Odyssey will also include an additional bonus disc. All three films will get a digital code (copy) of them included as well, making each of them a “combo pack” by definition. Their bonus materials will be identical to those found on the standard individual 4K UHD Blu-ray releases. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray set available for preorder over at Amazon as well as at retailers Best Buy and Target.
The bonus materials, as lengthy as they run to list, can be found after the break below.
BREAKING: The 1980 Stanley Kubrick directed version of the film “The Shining“ is officially coming to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format on October 1st, via Warner. The film, based on the novel by Stephen King, featured an unforgettable cast of Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers. There’s going to also be a Steelbook that will be exclusive to retailer Best Buy (pictured above). That 4K Steelbook is already available for pre-order now over at Best Buy. The standard 4K UHD Blu-ray release is also now available for pre-order over at Best Buy.
UPDATE: This 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for pre-order over at Amazon. The studio has issued a press release with some details about the upcoming 4K release. The tech specs for the release include 2160p video with HDR10 form of High Dynamic Range, although the aspect ratio has not yet been specified, with a lossless 5.1 sound mix – presumably in DTS-HD Master Audio. This will be in the 146-minute length version of the film. It’s worth noting that the very reputable Motion Picture Imaging Labs on the Warner lot was responsible for this remastering effort with help from Kubrick’s former personal assistant (Leon Vitali) and legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. You’ll find all that info and a list of bonus materials as well set to be included further below, after the break.
Retailer Best Buy has three Exclusive Steelbooks on Blu-ray Disc planned for movies based on Stephen King stories. The TV mini-series “It“ (1990), TV movie “Salem’s Lot“ (1979), and film “The Shining“ (1980) will get Steelbook treatment on October 2nd via Warner. The titles are all available for PRE-ORDER over at Best Buy priced at just $12.99 each. Their art can be seen above and below, but the full-size art hasn’t appeared yet on the web side, just on the mobile app side.
These are all three re-releases already available on the Blu-ray Disc format. No new transfers or bonus materials will be found on the new Steelbooks. It’s my guess that these are just being repackaged, likely in a marketing tie-in, to go with the currently available Warner produced Hulu series “Castle Rock“ – based on Stephen King stories.
