Escape from New York gets 4K stateside release in May

The 1981 film Escape from New York will officially be getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray “Collector’s Edition” release on May 17th via Scream Factory in the US (United States).  The film, directed by John Carpenter, starred Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins.

UPDATES:  The tech specs include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and likely Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range as well as some lossless audio mix, although yet specified.  This will be using the Studiocanal 4K restoration.  It is known (via the artwork, pictured above) that this release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with the 4K getting its Blu-ray Disc counterpart included.  The 4K UHD Blu-ray Collector’s Edition is now available for preorder over at Amazon.

Halloween Kills gets Extended cut on 4K and Blu-ray

The 2021 sequel “Halloween Kills” will be getting an “Extended Cut” (as well as the Theatrical Cut) on its 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Disc release on January 11th, 2022 which is officially coming from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The film, co-written and directed by David Gordon Green and executive produced by John Carpenter, stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Anthony Michael Hall, Robert Longstreet, Dylan Arnold, Will Patton, Thomas Mann, Scott MacArthur, Michael McDonald, Jim Cummings, Kyle Richards, Nancy StephensMichael Smallwood, and Carmela McNeal.

The tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range as well as Dolby Atmos sound, on a BD-100 disc. Tech specs for the Blu-ray include a 1080p HD video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Atmos sound on a BD-50 disc. The releases will both come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning the 4K will come with its Blu-ray counterpart, the Blu-ray will come with a DVD counterpart, and each will include a digital code (copy) of the film — compatible with Movies Anywhere.

You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. Also, you can find them available over at retailer Best Buy who will be getting an exclusive 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook release (pictured below) which is now listed as well.

The 1996 John Carpenter film Escape from L.A. starring Kurt Russell is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on February 22nd, 2022 via Paramount Home Entertainment. The film, sequel to “Escape from New York” (1981), co-starred Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Stacy Keach, Cliff Robertson, A.J. Langer, and Bruce Campbell.

The tech specs for the 4K release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround sound. The release will include a digital code (copy) of the film. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon. Sadly, it appears that the only extra set to be included with the release is the original theatrical trailer — according to the press release.

The 1982 remake of The Thing is coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on September 7th, via Universal, according to numerous retailer listings. The film, directed by John Carpenter, starred Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, Keith David, David Clennon, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Joel Polis, and Donald Moffat.

The tech specs for the release include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 form of high dynamic range and DTS:X immersive sound, on a BD-100 disc. The release will come in the form of a “combo pack” with its original Blu-ray Disc counterpart as well as include a digital code (copy) of the film, which is compatible with Movies Anywhere. You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray available for preorder over at Amazon, as well as listed (but not yet as a functional preorder) over at retailer Best Buy.

And, no, at this time there does not appear to be a 4K SteelBook release planned for this. But, stay tuned for a possible update if one is in fact coming. The bonus materials set to be included with the release are listed below.

Just a reminder, to my knowledge, this release has not yet been officially announced by the studio. Or, perhaps one of the public relations firms forgot to include me in the loop? That being said, consider this still a rumor with a whole lot to back it up at this point. I don’t want to upset the studio (Universal) here, but it’s pretty obvious that this title is coming at this point.

5 Halloween films on Collector’s Edition 4K October

The first five films in the “Halloween” film franchise have all received new 2021 4K scans and are officially coming to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format in “Collector’s Edition” form individually for each on October 5th via Scream Factory. Those films getting released include the following:

The films each, as previously mentioned have all received a new 4K scan this year and the tech specs for all include a 2160p video presentation (in a variety of aspect ratios) with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and new Dolby Atmos sound mixes, as well as some additional mixes. Since things like those aspect ratios and sound mixes vary film-to-film, I’ll be letting you look at the full press release later further below.

You can now find the 4K UHD Blu-ray listings for each of the films over at Amazon and you can access them via their titles above. You can also find them listed over at ShoutFactory.com with some additional extras you won’t find anywhere else.

The extras included on these new 4K UHD Blu-ray Collector’s Editions for each film are pretty elaborate, spanning across multiple discs in some instances. So, once again, I’ll be providing you with the full press release and details below, after the break.

1988 John Carpenter film “They Live” on 4K December

The 1988 John Carpenter film“They Live” is officially coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray on December 8th via Scream Factory. NOTE: This marks the very first 4K release from Shout! Factory in their Scream Factory collection. The John Carpenter directed film starred Roddy PiperKeith David, and Meg Foster. Tech specs for the release include a 2160p presentation with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound. The release will come with its Blu-ray Disc counterpart. If you all remember, I had posted last week that this release was rumored to be coming soon. Turns out that rumor was true.

UPDATE: The 4K UHD Blu-ray is now available for preorder over at Amazon. Keep in mind that it’s at MSRP (manufacturers’ suggested retail price) right now and should drop in its price over time. Also, keep in mind that Amazon features a “Pre-order Price Guarantee.” So, if it drops in price before the release date, they’ll refund you the difference.
